diesel rattle in D4D Prado

    I think, going back to my tour coach days and talking to the mechanic's there - it is a system check if it comes on and goes out. Just the ECM sorting it self out, checking systems.

    Back in the day, the recommendation was with the "newer" coaches that had DDEC and Eaton All World auto boxes, was to let the coach sit on ignition for 30 seconds before starting. Just to let the computers sort themselves out.

    Because I work in IT, I put it akin to booting a computer every time the ignition is turned on. I think those with Scantools will confirm this.

    • Redstorm I got my VCI dongle and techstream delivered today. When I tried to connect to the ECU the software asked me to enter the model of car. The Prado wasn't an option and it wasn't covered under landcruiser. Which option do you select to connect to the prado ECU?

      • When you installed did you select Global Techstream? I didn't and my Hilux wasn't auto detected either, I switched it to Global Techstream and then it worked for me.

        • Checking for a fuel leak after replacing the injector seals. no error was thrown so i assume it passed.

            All lights come on when you turn the key to ign i.e self test hence why it would come on when the engine is hot. Yesterday morning it was about 18-19deg and it took a little longer to go out.

                Is there a special procedure for check injector feedback or is it just a matter of observing the number on cold startup? My number 4 injector was -2.9 then rose slowly to -3.3 after 2 minutes. When I checked it hot yesterday it was at -2.5.

                  Nothing special, just read them from cold start to hot, if they are out of range at any point the general concensis is that it is time to replace them. BTW im not a mechanic, more of a computer mechanic...

                    I need some help here please.
                    I have read some very interesting info on this issue regarding injectors and the problems that keep arising with the D4D.
                    after talking with Adam (ondaboat) I took my Prado 08 model 84000 ks to Toyota for the rattle on cold start
                    It was left there over night for the cold start test and I was told the following.
                    Checked at cold start and some rattle evident but not out of ordinary.
                    Plugged in scan tool and checked injector values - values as follows
                    No1 0.9
                    No2 minus 2.1
                    No3 4.2
                    No4 minus 3.5
                    Number 3 and No 4 out of value of minus 3 to plus 3.
                    Used car Dept approved to replace 2 injectors if client wants replaced.
                    Parts required 2 x injectors (hitech diesel) + 5 hours labour.
                    Following parts will be relaced ONLY if required
                    Rocker cover gasket x 1 (1121330021)
                    Rocker cover injector seals x2 (2368230020)
                    Rocker top seals x 2 (2368130010)
                    Gaskets x 5 (9090430013)
                    My question is should they only replace 2 injectors? Thanks in advance for the feed back,

                    • They did the same with me after my engine blew at 73,000km. They only replaced the 2 injectors that were out of specification. So I now have 2 injectors that have done 25,000km and 2 that have done almost 100,000. They won't replace them unless they are faulty. You could pay for 2 more new ones and get them fitted at the same. They're also supposed to change the injector fuel lines at the same time.

                            • When my 120 got sick it was the same story, only going to replace the two that were out of spec. Mine was a Nov 07 engine so didn't have the 316 DLC injectors. Sanity prevailed and all 4 were replaced with new DLC injectors. Yours will be a harder task because the injectors won't be different models like mine would have been. You can try the 'what if I supply new in the box Toyota injectors and we go 50/50 on the cost which is cheaper than you can get them for and you guys do the install etc at yours'. Can't hurt. New Toyota injectors they might agree to. In that case Rick from NZ is your contact. Look at the injector price thread.

                              • They wanted $1150 each when mine failed. You can get them for $500 or better, check out the other threads as pointed out. You could have them delivered in 3 - 4 days.
