  • I worked out it was in Victoria, and in a National Park somewhere, based on the Parks Victoria sign on the Pillar. Given its construction I would guess near a logging area but beyond that it gets a bit hard not having been to that particular spot! Oh and you went there since the 2012 GTG

    Cheers Andrew

                • No guesses? Time for some clues....

Built in 1865, near a place where the hills are twice as steep and twice as rough,
Where a horse's hoofs strike firelight from the flint stones every stride,
The school kids may have watched a man called Clancy pass by

Not quite - Its in the area that Clancy supposedly came from, but its a two room school house built by a guy called Edward O'Rourke who had 13 kids.

Warmish. It's not a hut, it's a school house, located 431 km north east of Melbourne and 133 km north of Orbost in the Snowy Mountains.

You'll need to check out my Vic High Country report.

The smaller of the two rooms was for a tutor named Ballantyne who was hired to teach O'Rourke's thirteen children. A man named Tom Dillon, who worked for the family, is buried in a grave at the top of the hill near the school house. He was a ticket-of-leave man; a convict who was granted freedom of lodging and occupation within a given district until the termination of his sentence.

It seems that the town's name came from the Aboriginal expression 'bukkan bukkan' which was a term used to describe bags made from grass.
