  • Seems my post in July was right....

Only the one crack above the sat nav that finally revealed itself, then bang - suddenly I have a crack stretching most of the way across the passenger side of the dash above the glovebox but below the line of the dashmat (extending from the air vent to the left of the sat nav across almost to the left-most air vent near the passenger door).

    Oh well.....

I think we just need to live with the fact that NO car manufacturer these days will put in 100% effort. They'll save money wherever they can to make a quick buck.
Problem is, until you join a respectable forum and start reading about all the issues with a car, you really won't know about them all. Sad fact.

Hey Wtrxprs007, this electronic parts catalogue looks very useful... where did you get it? Would you be willing to share it?

yes, very useful. But it's actually a pirated download from a torrenting website. Not sure if anyone here would do that but yeah lol.

Even though it's a 2013 parts catalogue, I surprisingly found part numbers and diagrams for the 2014 cars including the new facelift 150. Also includes some US Lexus models too which is pretty cool!

I believe it's a 70gb download though… MASSIVE, but I am willing to share any part numbers you guys need and diagrams too if I can

              • Have just concluded an "ongoing discussion" with local Mackay dealership re the replacement of dash in 04 Prado. For a fleeting moment it looked as though they were going to come to the party with a reduction of price for replacement dash (quoted $950 ???) Then they phone asking for my vehicles service history, I asked what has service history got to do with a cracked dash ? End result, they don't want to know me and reiterated that they have not heard of any systemic problem with Prado dashes cracking. Mine went from pristine to cracked everywhere within a 12 month period despite being regularly cleaned, use of upholstery conditioner and a dash mat. Steer clear of this dealership if you want to save a lot of grief

                • Barney mine just cracked in one spot over night, nothing one day woke up to a crack in the dash the next. I'm not even bothering to attempt to get Toyota to look at it, only has 150 on the clock (05 model) always garaged and has dash mat with a sunvisor used daily. When it gets to the point of shitting me when I jump in ill buy a replacement and wack it in. ...... Cheers Steve

                  • I was going to live with cracked dash also Steve up till I thought the evaporator in my air con cracked up. Thought I might as well replace dash if it was being pulled out for the aircon repairs. Local Toyota also quoted me $145/hr labour and said it was an 8 hour job. Found out it was compressor that had given up so dash doesn't need to come out, guess I'll get used to all the cracks

                    • We bought our 2005 Prado with a badly cracked dash. It gave us an extra bargaining point when it came time to talk dollars. Every single Prado we looked at in our price range had a cracked dash, except one of them, but it had other mechanical issues that i didn't want to know about. I put a dash mat over it straight away and really we don't care about it anymore. Yes, it might affect resale a little, so what, it will be a 12-13 year-old car by the time we sell! I'm not going to invest my money and time to replace the damn thing, when i may not get all that money back when i sell. It is annoying that it was such a common fault though and Toyota have done nothing to fix it.

I have a 2004 Prado VX that has never been off road and has been garaged out of the sun and its heat both at home and at work. The arch over the driver's instrument panel has a fine crack concealed from view by the steering wheel. The car has been serviced since new by the Toyota dealer I bought it from. Toyota has declined my claim that they should fix the problem at no charge to me. I am told that they have been repairing the problem where it arose within the 10 years after the date of sale. I notified them at the the ten year mark plus or minus a month!!!! They certainly did not check for the problem on a service or else they just stayed silent!
I am thinking of taking legal action. Would anyone care to join me in suing Toyota for the cost of repairs?
We might start a "class action" i there is strong enough demand!
                        Let me know please.

I am surprised at the apathy being displayed on this page and the one following on the subject of making Toyota pay for the replacement of an inferior product.
I had a 2003 120 and after a lot of letters and contact with the NSW Consumer, Trader & Tenancy Tribunal, I had Toyota go halves in the replacement.
I have a 2008 120 now and if I have to get this one replaced, the CTTT will be very interested in the fact that the same model vehicle has the same problem it did when they first came on the market.

It is not hard to send in a complaint and any decision is binding on Toyota. They ignored the first summons but when the magistrate sent a second one saying that if there was a no show again, he would make a decision without them! And it is legally binding.

I can send copies of applications if anyone wants them.

                          • What's the big deal? In 1964 they made vinyl that lasted for over 30 years. 50 years later we can't make vinyl last 10 years?

                            • Apparently not.
If the things we buy lasted as long as they did 50 years ago then no one would buy anything. They want us to be happy little consumers and keep replacing things more frequently to turn over the economy.

                              • So is there any preventative measures we can take to avoid dash cracking? Mines an 2008 that's never been off-road and was garaged by the previous owner but never had dash mat.
Mine now lives outdoors as I can't get it into my garage, so has anyone come to any conclusion in either getting a dash mat or some additive or liquid to protect it? Will anything help it?
