Reply from toyota new zealand reg the dash and air bag
Hi Steve
Thank you for your further email regarding your concern about the passenger side airbag in the dash and if it is possible for the air to blow to the side if the dash was cracked in the wrong area.
We have discussed your concern with our Service Team who advise the following:
· As we have not seen a photo to comment if the dash pad part of the passenger air bag was cracked, potentially yes the airbag system could be affected and may be turned down for WOF.
· With regards to the air effecting anything, from the photos supplied, the cracks seem to be superficial and don’t run deep enough to adversely affect anything.
We hope the above offers some clarification for you.
Once again, thank you for your further email and for allowing us this opportunity to answer your questions.

Hi there mate...
I've got a 2003 120 4l Petrol auto....good value and runs well...
The dash board is the only issue...it's cracked all over which on its own is not an issue really...its the noise it makes with any acceleration....a droning bzzzzzzzzz until i take the foot off the pedal...only solution currently is to turn the music up :-).....
did anyone come back to you on an item like this when you posted this?
I'd be keen to know if there is a standard item to look for or is it a case of remove the dash and seal it all up or replace the dash with another one?
any feedback is appreciated mate
Alan

Quick update...
So I persisted with emails to Toyota Head Office, requesting an update on the progress of my warranty claim.
Head Office told me they'd get onto it, and yesterday I got a call from the Toyota Dealership I went to, asking me to come back down to have photos taken!!
So left work early today and went back down and asked for Warranty Manager in person. He reckons he has only seen one other Prado with a cracked dash, however then the young bloke who was taking the photos piped up and reckons he has seen heaps of them!
Now just waiting for Head Office to get back to me.
My take on it - I don't reckon the Toyota Dealership ever took the photos, or if they did, never sent them, and expected me to go quietly into the night after telling me my warranty was denied.
How wrong...Last edited by Madkore; 09-09-2015, 12:18 AM.NOW FOR SALE!!! - 2004 Silver GXL 3lt 4spd Auto - ARB Bullbar, Safari Snorkel, Redarc Dual Battery System, Cooper ST MAXX, Dark Tint, IPF900XS spots, Raised Bilstein/Kings Suspension/Firestone Airbags, Autosafe Cargo Barrier, Sandgrabbers, Rola Roof Rack Stuff, Insect Screen, Dust/Wind Deflectors, Sheepskin/Black Duck Seatcovers, GME TX3510, ARB underbonnet compressor, Allied Hammer Rims, ARB UVP, AJ Sliders

To go with my cracking dash, I have now found that 3/4 of the passenger airbag has gone tacky. It's a darker colour and almost feels as though it is melting.
Has anyone else had this???04 GXL - Red Centa dual battery, Alloy B/bar, BFG AT's, Rhino Rack commercial bars x 3, GME TX3540, TJM roof cage, Outback Ideas recovery points, LHS rear drawer, 2" Dobinsons/Bilstein lift, ARB CKMA12 air compressor, CoilRite airbags, ARB 2.5m awning, MCC Dual Wheel Carrier, Eagle Eye headlights with 55w hid lo beam.

You can add me to the cracked dash list also guys. I'm about to buy a 1003 Prado; it has the usual age wear and tear but I couldn't get over the dash cracks. That's why I'm reading this thread; I wanted to see if it was a problem and clearly it is. So much for the dealer who has only seen one cracked before.

I bought a replacement dash during the week and did the replacement over the weekend. Time taken was approx 6 hours, although some of that time was taken up by installing additional cables for the Parrot Asteroid Smart Radio. It certainly improves the look and gives you back the new car smell. I'm surprised that more people haven't done it themselves as it seemed to be a relatively straightforward job.
After having a close look at my old dash I certainly have the impression that the cracking is not just the vinyl cracking, but the polyurethane foam underneath as well. It will be interesting to see how long TMCA continue to stock replacement dashes as a spare part. This is based on my understanding that the Trade Practices act only requires a manufacturer to make them available for 7 years after the vehicle was last built.
