That is super cheap and not what most customers could expect IMO. I did a R&R dash on a 2009 Prado a few weeks ago. The job takes a few hours. Most dealerships charge $90.00 per hour and up.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

I dont mind giving them a plug, they were very helpful throughout the whole dash saga. Also sold me the part for trade.

If you can get the dashpad for under a grand, its a pretty good price IMO

              • I just bought my prado 2nd hand and all seemed well, had a roadworthy done on it and was a pretty tidy rig
Guess an oversite on my behalf as i didnt lift the dash mat to see if it had a cracked dash, only 2004 model so who would.
Now I am being told that this crack, because it is across the passenger airbag, meens the car should not have passed a roadworthy in the first place, the roadworthy is still current but I'm a bit lost. Do I?
take it up with the road worthy people, Dept of transport, Toyota, or count my losses and live with it.

                  • Problem is if you take it to the RTA and it is illegal (my mate says it is and he does pink slips but may be worth finding out 100%) then they may slap a defect notice on it ?? wether it would be a yellow or a red I have no idea, they may not even give it one (hence finding out first) but if they do slap a yellow canary on it they come with a limit of how long you have to rectify the issue, in your case a cracked dash pad. So by doing this may put pressure on yourself to have it repaired in say a month which means out laying roughly what ?? $1500/$2000 ?? If its a red one then you cant drive it at all till its repaired. If you bought it from a yard then it would be worth finding out wether its illegal or not as then the balls in your court. Take it to them (with a photo copy of the inspection certificate NOT the original) as they sold you a motor vehicle that is not road worthy, then they are required to fix it. If you bought it privately guess what ?? nothing you can do except if illegal get the person that gave it a pink slip in trouble with really isnt going to get you anywhere and to be honest its probably some thing he wouldnt even think of checking, (like yourself).....Id find out first just by ringing the RTA and go from there.....Cheers Steve

                    • Cheers for the advise.
think it is something I may just have to live with untill i can replace it myself.
As it was bought privately I can't be bothered chassing the roadworthy crowd, It isn't something you find on cars even 25 years old let alone one built this century.
Pretty poor quality on Toyota's behalf, does'nt mean I will buy a nissan though.

                      • Toyota has just advised that they will cover 75% of the cost of the part on my 2004 Prado. So I'm happy with that.

Won't know untill next week. Will advise what the quote is. Labour rate seems to fluctuate between the dealers. But I am expecting around $90 per hour.

                              • without going through all the threads, I have had a response from a Toyota dealer that they have rejected my claim. It stinks of the Dunlop Grandtrek issues back in the nineties with the 80 series land cruiser for those that remember. How do I escalate this up, my Prado Grande is 2003, so out of warranty, but this is a design fault and should last a lot longer. Car has been garaged most of its life and services by a Toyota dealer all of its life. I'm the original owner. what do I do, now the dealer has rejected it. I'm actually quite insulted by Toyota as I've probably purchased 500 4wd toyotas in my mining career with new mines or fleet replacements, but havnt done this for about 8 years. I also have not mentioned this in my dealings so far, as I want Toyota to do the right thing.
In the nineties I wrote to 4x4 magazine about the issue with Grandtreks and Toyota dealt with it and replaced all my Tyres free of charge, but didn't do a recall, although I had 3 blow out on me at high speed on a gravel road. Remember Ford Explorer and Firestone in the US, Toyota dodged this as well.
If anyone can help me out asap that would be great, I believe some people with old prado's have been looked after.
