  • Bypass the S-bends in the air intake + Safari Snorkel

I'm seriiously thinking of getting a Safari Snorkel fitted to my Diesel.

    I have three questions...

    1. I have heard about a 'kit' to remove the S-bends in the air intake & make the airflow direct to the air filter...does anyone know where I can get such a thing?
    2. Will the kit make a signicant difference & will the kit make it easier to make the whole thing air tight?
    3. Do I have to seal up anything else once the snorkel is fitted to make it airtight? - I'm familiar with the bag over the snorkel test.....

    Cheers

    Hi Richard,

I dont know if there is a commercial "kit" available but if you go to the 90scool website and look in the photo section there is a folder there called Damien Ws snorkel.

It shows a couple of photos of what he did to remove the restriction with the s bend. He basically used what looks like a 90 degree drainage pipe bend to run the air flow directly into the air box.

From memory there is a write up associated with the modification that explains what he did, you'll probably have to do a search.

I'm not sure how a drain pipe fitting would stand up to an off road beating, but I guess it provides some sort of an idea of what can be done. I guess its your choice as to what sort of materials you use.

Re: Bypass the S-bends in the air intake + Safari Snorkel

Old thread I know but this may help from the A4WDM site I posted on.

The pics are gone now due to my PB account going west.
I might have the pics somewhere on my PC (maybe, not a promise. I'll look tho)
          EDIT: Text and pics added
The whole thing has held up well considering it has been up to QLD, into Arnhem land, and across to Perth. Not to mention all the smaller weekend and day trips. Still seams water tight going by my last dunking in the old H2O which was just over headlight height

This is a view from the engine bay with the aux battery removed and the Toyota inlet ducting removed. The large hole towards the front of the inner guard is where the ducting used to enter the engine bay

This is a view from under the guard with the hose from the snorkel and the Toyota inlet ducting removed

This is the standard Toyota inlet ducting that I removed. The join half way round the 180 bend is where it entered the engine bay. The clean bit is from inside the engine bay, the dirty bit is under the guard.

This is the new hole I cut. I put heavy duty fuel hose around the hole as a grommet after filling the hole out so when the fitting went thru (with grommet in place) it is a tightish fit. Hopefully this will reduce wear.

This is the fitting I made. I made it from 65mm PVC down pipe using a 90 (well 88 really) bend and some strait pipe. The clamp is a clamp for down pipe on a house. The metal braket on the clamp is scrap metal from the hole I cut. On final fitment, I glued and siliconed all joins

This is what it looks like fitted up from under the guard. No fuel hose yet cause this is trial fitting.

And from inside the engine bay.

This is what it looks like from inside the engine bay with the hose between my fitting and the air cleaner in place. (I've also fitted the aux battery)

This is how I modded the air cleaner. I placed a piece of the PVC pipe inside the inlet pipe. I had to turn it down by 1mm to get a good fit (bitch of a job and a few goes on a lathe). I glued and fiberglassed (as opposed to just silicone) it in hoping for durability. The fibreglassing hasn't been done in this foto.

This is the whole shebang fitted (before final painting and detailing)
