Forgot to mention the (white) people driving ordinary cars including Mitsubishi Lancer, Toyota Camry (3 x European back packers) and baby SUV. They all reckon they're up for it. The locals drive Commodores and Falcons along the GC Road all the time. So this means the Prado will do it easily and comfortably. The road houses shut at 4pm weekdays and 3pm weekends (local times). Add 45 mins or 90mins to Perth time depending on how far along the road you go.

Bugger Bali, get out and see Australia before we sell it all to China.

Thanks for the advice. Looks like no problems. Wish I could say the same for futher east. Lots of road closures so looks like I might have to give the Plenty a miss and go round via Tennent Ck and Isa.

Did GCR it last Sep as part of a big loop from Melbourne to Norseman, Laverton, Ululru, Kata Tjuta, Alice, Oodnadata, Flinders Ranges, Broken Hill, Border Track and back to Melbourne.

        Was awesome!

In Alice after doing Perth - Alice in 2 days

GCR was an easy run, just long. Most of the way I could sit on 110. The Prado's 180l of fuel is great on a trip like this. Plenty highway tomorrow

Hey Timmay. If you're still on your way out there.. you mention petrol.
            Distance between fuel stops is Laverton - Tkukayirla (300) - Warburton (250km) - Warakurna (250) - Yulara (300).

Best check ahead closer to departure as if there's been bad weather sometimes fuel trucks don't get through - Tjukayirla is particularly prone to running out.

Don't carry jerries of petrol, buy Opal from either Ayers Rock or Laverton. There are still a few people with sniffing probs out there and tourists with jerries are a very easy target and it causes a hell of a problem. And don't worry about what people say about Opal, I ran late model injected car out there for a few years with no problem.

PS it's nice to carry a few extra bottles of water (big ones) in case you come across broken down people. They'll appreciate it and you'll make some friends.

And drop your tire pressures, get a TPMS and carry plugs.

            Cheers.

Back home after returning via Isa, Tennent ck Alice and Great Central Road.

Thought I would try the longer sealed route instead of Plenty Highway as with 130km speed in the NT thought it might be quicker. The Plenty was slightly faster route.

Had no problems for the entire Perth - Townsville - Perth trip. 9000km in all

For anyone looking for information on the region. My wife and I have started a blog to help travellers out. We live a Docker River and thought out insights might be appreciated by some. www.yourtripright.com

He didn't get any pics - he was driving too fast to stop and take photos.

Just drove the Whitecliff Rd today from Yamarna to Laverton, much more scenic than the Great Central.

g'day krypto, we are planning to take the drive perth to yalara in April, interested in your comments the whitecliff road is worth a drive. Would be looking to link up with the great central road north of Yamarna And continue to the border.

What was the road condition like compared to the great central? As we want to make good time early in our trip.
