  • Larger diameter exhaust on 3.4.

After looking under the Prado to see what had jamed the brakes on (rust).
I noticed the exhaust looks quite restrictive in sections, particularly where it merges from from the left and right side of the engine.
The pipe is squashed to about 25mm high. It is also flat where it runs over the tailshaft. Has anyone tried a free flowing exhaust? Were you happy with the results?. Ive heard Beaudesert exhausts mentioned on forums before. I would imagine that somewhere in Darwin would be able to build a system judging by the number of 4WD's up here.

I looked at those threads, but there doesn't seem to be much on the 3.4L naturally aspirated petrol...

So... Does anyone know if a bigger exhaust will help the 3.4 much?

I also need to get some work done on mine. I bent the end badly reversing down a hill, so I chopped the last 1m or so off.

I can't view it since I'm not a member! I did try signing up a while ago, but the admin never got around to approving my application! My injured pride has since healed, so I'll try again.

Here is a copy from LCOOL (http://www.lcool.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=825):

Hi, just joined your site, thought I'd share a quick little mod I made to my Prado. At the front of the main muffler there's a plate that hides a spring loaded flap that allows exhaust gas to bypass part of the muffler when it's revving with load and creating extra exhaust pressure.

As long as you drown the nuts with WD40 or similar and wait a few hours before having a go at them there should be no problems getting the plate off.

All I did is simply take off the actual flap and then put it all back together using maniseal sealant because the gasket broke up. It does not sound much different, just feels like it pulls a bit better at half throttle under 3 grand. Cost me nothing!

Ah, thanks KZJ90! I'll give that mod a try!

There's another very restricted looking spot upstream from the main muffler - the Y-connection. I wonder if anyone has replaced that bit...
