Just checked with ARB, they claim post 2004 prado bull bar towpoints ARE suitable for snatching and winching. provided you use a rated shackle

The eyelets are made of two welded layers of the sheet (~4mm) used to make the bull bar, rough 1 cm combined thickness.

"This style of recovery point has been used for a number of years without any problems in other bull bars and rear bars".

      Hi all
Spoke to ARB to today who confirmed that the early front bars
can be fitted with recovery points .It involves removing the bar (bugger)
and replacing the mounting bracket behind it. I also found the points
are rated to 8000lbs for recovery puroposes . I hope that clears a few
      things up for some people.

      cheers

I stand corrected, the new ARB Prado bar does have snatching points as an integral part of the bar. I was confused with the mounts on my GQ bar that are at the front of the bar and are for winching only.

does anyone know if your knock up the recovery points yourself,
like samo has done, and i've also just finished my version, if they are
"rated" recovery points. the reason i ask is i've heard for driver training days, your vehicle must have blah blah and rated recovery points.
so would these pass their requirements

No, to be "Rated" they must be either engineered (the maths done to calculate their safe working load) or tested to NATA standards (actual mechanical test to the point at which they fail)

you r right in what you say mick, they r not rated but i would bet my balls that my points would be the very similar rating to the outback ideas. they r made out of the same thickness plate, supplies with same 8.8 grade bolts and all the corners inside where the shackle attaches have been radiused to reduce a shear points. cheers samo

                            its a bugger

Well half way through fitting the outback ideas recovery points and its one of those curse jobs for me, i removed the bolts for the radiator. The bottom bolts are tricky to remove dont know how i will go getting them back in.
I was using one of those attachments that drills around corners but needless to say they are typical chinese rubbish i didnt even make it through one hole. Hopefully all goes well.

                              Hey Samo

Thanks for the detailed drawing, made making mine very easy. I'm wondering if you remember what size the bolts are, that way I can have every thing ready to b4 I install them

                              Thanks again

                                i used M12's 8.8 high tensile.
your best to check the length of your lower bolts.
i had trouble finding the M12 fine thread to do this, but
found some toyota bolts in my toolbox the correct type and size.
