  • Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

    Cant help on a camper.

But V6 with 2 guys, 4 spare wheels/rally tyres, Tools (40 kg) Spares (70kg) and a 700 Kilo trailer with a 1350 kg car (wrx) on it. (+ 350 litres of fuel all up).

    Returning averages of 15-16 L per 100.
Best ever was Mt Gambier --> Adelaide 14.5 Litres per 100!! Pretty flat and no wind.

The shape of the WRX helps though as if we put a Mates race moke on the same trailer (and moke weighs 660 kilo!!) it uses 15% more fuel! Moke has a big flat windscreen!

    I would expect averages of 16 l per 100?

***Forgot to say, I only run mine 100% on BP premium 98+ fuel. That has dropped the economy a bit which is nice.

We just spent the weekend out near Abercrombie River NP. Filled up before we went. Towed a camper trailer about 200km each way over Blue Mtns, then a day of 4wd'ing (fair bit of low range) in national park. Filled up on Tuesday - 17.6 l/100km.

I've only had the Prado 4 weeks, so am still to work out what's good. I've filled up twice before this week and have averaged 15.9 and then 16.5 l/100km in normal city driving.

I've averaged 15.65 around town (Melb). This is over 17844kms and includes some towing and non towing hwy runs. Towing our Goldstream wind-up camper around Oz I averaged a bit over 18 (haven't got the spreadsheet with exact numbers here). If I could keep her down to 90-95 I'd get a lot better as a couple of days where I was following my father-in-law (he was towing his 20ft van with his manual D4D) I did get averages in the 15's.

Matt, expect around 18l per 100km.
I don't even know the camper is there...

I've now done 87k in my 2004 5 speed 4.0L auto. Approximately 7k towing a 17' pop top van, Simpson Desert and Flinders Ranges trip, regular beach driving, drive through city to work daily and average 14.8 litres/100 since new.

Just came back from an 8 week trip towing an 18ft pop top van. Did 8,500 km & this would involve towing for around 6,000 km. Mine is petrol & average consumption was 16.6 km per 100 km. Very happy with this figure as we did some low range 4WDriving as well,

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

              2007 gxl petrol auto.
Gidday, July -08 i towed my 17' x 7.6' jayco westport pop top (weighs 2 tonne) from Brisbane to Sydney on 1 tank and when refuelled worked out at 16.8 litres per 100 which i was very happy with.

On the same trip on the way up to brisbane from Sydney in my old 96 Prado 3.4 litre petrol auto trans, fuel consumption was a horrible 26.5 litres per 100. I traded up to the 2007 GXL 5 speed auto while in Brisbane (good deal from Motorama Toyota) and was pleasantly surprised at how easy the new truck pulled the van. The extra hoses sure make a big difference.

I looked at updating the 96 prado in Sydney for several weeks prior to my trip north and in the end got sick of looking at the overpriced earlier models (03-05) so found the Motorama web site which had numerous models to pick from. I found what i was looking for and was happy with the price which incidently was around $5k cheaper that the sales nerds in Sydney were trying to flog off to me.

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

Not Happy at all with my figures, need help!!! Just done a trip to the Murray on the Hume Hwy, towing a 17 foot Jayco Heritage pop top, 3 adults on board. Started on Gas only got 230 k's on 63 litres!!! Driving between 95 to 100 kph in drive and not using cruise control.Switched to petrol and results the same!!! Just watched the guage dropping as I was driving!!! Have checked if brakes on caravan are sticking and same with the car, everything is fine there, new air filter 4000k's ago, can't explain this at all, it seems incredible that some of you guys are getting brilliant fuel economy on petrol, I have never got anywhere near your figures even without the van, would like to think there is a problem with the car but it seems fine, so can anyone come up with a few ideas before it goes to Toyota?

Your not alone Stevo, my un towing figures are similar to most guys above towing ! with my dirt bike in the box trailer ( Offroad CT trailer ) im running about 20 litres per hundred, Out of interest did you pull it out of 5th gear ? you will find it will pull trailers better out of overdrive, especially if there are any signs of hills or head wind, mine has always been lousy economy wise when towing, no issue with power  but economy poor. I just drive it though, not concerning myself with trying to stick to 95km or anything. 110-120kmh towing and the fuel guage really starts to drop

Mine is a Petrol 4 speed auto.

                    Stevo,

Your figures certainly don't look good. I have a V6 & the last 2 days have towed a van from Newcastle to Uralla via Nundle. It is an 18ft pop top & there is a fair bit of climbing in that trip & my consumption (via Scanguage - which has proven to be very accurate) was just a fraction under 18L per 100km. I usually get better than that. My Prado has done 30K & I have kept a spreadsheet on fuel since new. Overall my figures are 14.82L per 100km. That distances covers a 3 month trip towing the van as well as many short trips towing. Also an outback camping trip with lots of weight. When at home it is city stuff on very short trips. In those times I get around 15.5L per 100km. Also do 4WD on occasions.

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

                      thanks for that
Usually drive in "D" unless there are hills then drop back to 4th, mine has just 108,000 k's due for service soon but the best I have ever had was a trip to Sydney not towing and got 380k's using 64 litres of fuel and that was always at the speed limit, no roof racks etc, got a load of power but lousy economy, by the way the trip computer is telling me when towing that I am averaging 20 litres per 100 but the pump is telling me 31 litres per 100!!! go figure!!!
                      thanks anyway Stevo

                        Hi Willy
you are very lucky with your fuel consumption figures, I put mine on gas thinking I would be miles in front but having to fill up every 230 k's is not funny at all, my trip computer is telling me I am using 20 litres per 100 on average when towing but there is a massive difference at the pumps.Thinking spark plugs may need changing.
thanks for your amazing figures now I really feel sick!!

sadly the bowser calcs are likely to be more accurate!

Are you running std size tyres? Have you checked distance travelled against a GPS or kilometer marks?

My overall average is about 16.6L/100km (over 60,000km). Around town I get 15.5-16, towing around 18-19 (@ 100kph... definetely can get better by slowing down to 90-95kph) and for non-towing highway work, it sucks it's jungle juice at 10-11L at 100kph and 13-14L at 110-115kph.

                          Nige.

                            Hi Nige
running a brand new set of BFG's AT'S 265 65 17 (brilliant tyres by the way) and have checked with gps mileage is accurate, just sat down and done the figures
27 litres per 100 on gas
24 litres per 100 on petrol, these are towing figures, will do another test on the weekend without towing
still think there is a problem with the car
                            thanks Stevo

Just averaged 16.7 l/100km after 550 km. 230km of that was towing a 19' runabout which weighs around 1800kg, through rolling hills. I reckon with the boat on it was using fairly close to 20l/100km
