  • What Did You Learn Today?

OK, we all know we learn new things everyday. I thought it would be a good opportunity to write some of these things down so that we all can learn from our experiences (mistakes?).

Now these don't have to have anything to do with Prado's & it can be really basic stuff too.

    I'll get the ball running...
    • Wireless-N network 802.11n is backward compatible with wireless-G 802.11g. I recently purchased a new laptop which offered wireless-N as an upgrade, my research led me to believe it will work even though wireless-G works @ 2.4Ghz & wireless-N can work at 5GHz &/or 2.4Ghz.

Well it works fine on my TPLink wireless-G Router.

    & a second.....just to show I'm not a total computer nerd...
    • When putting up one of those foldup collapsible gazebos - get someone to help you. It is really difficult to be on both sides of the unit at the same time so you can unfold it. Also, when you do get it up, spray all the joints & the legs where the upper section slides up & down with silicon spray. This will make it much easier to erect & foldup next time.
      - Also, don't leave them standing in strong wind - they will break! (Thats why I needed a new one - again :?

Wasn't today, but yesterday I learnt that a 79 series Cruiser can get bogged up to the sills underground!

I was cruising with the Nipper yesterday when he moved to the side for a Truck and well, we kinda sunk!

The road had been freshly graded and all the loose stuff was pushed to the side and we drove into it as it looked compacted, but it wasn't...

    That was fun, Not!

For those, like me, who love their coffee.....here is an altenative when your not close to a Maccas or a Cafe.

I have tried the Mocca version & its not too bad.....better than tea & easier to pack & use than ordinary coffee/sugar/milk. Instructions, add sachet to mug & add hot (not boiling) water whilst stiring.

There seems to be at least 5 versions...
        • Cappuccino unsweetened
          Cappuccino Sweetened
          Latte
          Mocca
          Hazelnut

I also add a little milk if I have it, but its OK without. It was about $5 for 10 sachets. Enough for a weekend trip anyway.

I learnt that most employees (Not all) don't give a rats about their work ethic! They know that if something important needs doing, and if they don't do it, someone else will. Pitty it is so hard hiring good help these days.

What did I learn today? That wifey's Camry 2.4L still doesn't use a drop of oil even after 70K. Meanwhile my SS continues to consume 1L per 5,000kms (98K). Anyway, chalk and cheese... one is a shopping trolley, the other a high performance, weekend warrior. You can guess which is which.

Gotta love the engineering and build integrity of these Toyotas even though my heart is all Holden. I guess that's why I'm looking at a Prado circa mid year. It'll be unfortunate having to trade the Camry in for it b/c its such a good car. And I don't mind driving it either. It's not a busy as my car and it's easier to drive unless you're trying to overtake. A bit of power always helps get you out of trouble.

I thought this topic was the right one to have a babble.

snow on the ground looks great, but when it warms up, it melts into puddles of water, then when it cools down, they freeze.... puddles then are easily disguised by the next nights snow, and aint too many pairs of shoes that can keep a man upright on hidden ice...

A block of wood normally used as a base for a car jack, can be split & used as a replacement engine mount. Luckily it wasn't my 2.8L Toyota Hilux, but someone we stopped to give a hand to on the weekend.
The temporary repair worked well enough to complete the rest of the drive out of Bendethera, & a slight readjustment allowed the car to return to Queanbeyan. In hindsight none of us had anything that would suffice if it happened to us!

OK so I had a flat nattery on the long weekend....not supprising the battery is at least 4 years old. Anyway I go to my local battery place, tell them I have a Prado & the first thing they say "Oh, those are real buggers to get the right battery for!"

I'm thinking how hard can it be?....Anyway I said yep the battery is on the left when looking in the engine bay from the front. That would mean that the negative needs to be also on the left near the side panel where the earth terminal screws into.

Anyway, 1/2 way home I think to myself....hangon......! It would be on the left if the earth cable came at the battery from the front, but it doesn't. It comes to the battery from the rear so the negative terminal needs to be in the upper left corner of the battery & not the front left corner. Needless to say, I had to swap it with what it turns out to be is a normal battery. The other is a type "L".

Have a look at this pic as an example from a 120 series, but the same wiring applies.

picture courtesy of embi from this thread http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic....asc&highlight=

So in summary, double check which side of the car the battery is on & then double check where each terminal needs to be. i.e. front or back.

                        Cheers

I learnt that it's not always a good thing to be good at your job. I got a call yesterday to go fix a problem at a house another cleaner missed and the guests had moved in and complained. (The regular cleaner was not contactable  )
What she had missed when she turned off the down stairs fridge was a bag of fish bait in the freezer!!! This bag had been sitting there since Monday!!! As you can imagine it was fly blown and full of magots.
I'm so glad that I hadn't had time for lunch.
I'm getting well compensated for my time but it still bugs me that someone could be so blind as to miss something like that in the first place. The letting agent came to the house while I was there and we did a property inspection during which I'm going around with a rag and cleanser fixing other stuff she missed

Know just how you feel there Matt.

Last year I threw our canoe on top of the Prado racks, cause I wanted to carry it about 100 metres "upstream". My son 11, said, "hadn't you better tie it on dad?" and I said, "No mate, i'm only going a short way"

Of course the canoe fell and broke off my side mirror!

Expensive exercise - but we probably should listen more!
