  • Keeping Spotties where I left them.....

Hey guys, I am another new guy on the Prado scene and already I have learnt so much from the forums topics, thanx heaps.

I had a nice pair of IPF's fitted today, and was curious as to how I can stop (slow down?) the feral mongrels that might like them on their car instead of the Prado.......

    Thanx again, Slowie

I have seen this in real life and the thief just undoes the nut with a long spanner, and effectively it becomes a padlock breaker!! (you need to use small padlocks and they have bugger all strength, the nut undoing is enough to shear them off).

What you need to do (and it was covered in another thread earlier) is drill two welsh plugs (one slightly larger than the other).
Fit one under the nut and tighten it up, and the other slides over then fit the padlock holding the second welsh plug over the other end of the nut.
No way to undo the nut to shear the lock as a spanner cant get onto it due to the plugs.
Make sure they cant get a chunky screwdriver into the lock either to force it.

As said, you can get special nuts for them from certain stores, they are like the mag wheel locking nuts.

Most unlikly as Barrier nuts have hundreds of combinations, not like the cheap copys which only have 1 or 2

                  Driving lights..

Here's a sure way to keep them on...

If you catch someone removing them - remove his arms instead

this seems to have the affect of reducing theft :P

ARB (used to anyways) sell 'domed' (ie in teh shape of a dome) lock nuts for spotties. You need a keyed socket that fits onto your extension socket driver.

I think they were less than $20; I have had them on a few previous vehicles with IPF lights.

                    See http://arb.com.au/ipf-globes-and-accessories.php for details

I use the keyed lock nuts as mentioned above.
When you consider the price of a set of IPF's or lightforce, the nuts are quite cheap.

Thanx heaps for the different ideas guys. Ripped down to me ARB store today, $27 for a pair of barri-nuts, home to fit them and hello, I remembered team Piggy's comment about a thievin' mongrel using a big spanner, so I combined this with the welsh plug idea !!!
Found a couple of stainless cover plates (used for plumbing) in the shed and covered the nuts, fitted the Barri nuts, and I feel better I have slowed the mongrels down at least.

Now just need to work out how to add the bit at the bottom of my messages, eg, 2007 GXL etc
