  • DIY Safari Snorkel install

Wedding Anniversary, Christmas and Birthday all at once ...... or it feels like it ..... finally got my snorkel and spent a bit of time this morning cutting holes in the car and bolting it on.

First off ... removed the air filter box and pre cleaner pipe. Discard the water scoop.

There are 3 locating lugs on the pre cleaner housing that need to be removed. I used a die grinder

The plastic inner guard removed . Be warned ... the plastic clips that hold this in place do not all survive the removal process. Its a good idea to get your local Toyo dealer to supply you with a set of spares.

Tape on the template and mark the holes .... then just to be sure - remove the template and line it back up again ... just to see if the marks have moved

Here's the step drill bit for drilling sheet metal without damage. Its the duck's nuts for this sort of job.

OMG ... I'm sure glad Bek's not here to see this.

Five 16 mm holes drilled ... no, they don't have to be that big. 16 mm is so that Toyota workshop apprentices can drill the holes and still have room to get the snorkel to line up

Then the big kahuna .... go slow .. this can get messy

I used a die grinder to de-burr the holes.

Trial fit the snorkel with the A pillar bracket fitted. Mark the location of the A pillar bracket. Remove the snorkel, locate the A pillar bracket and mark these holes ... drill to 8 mm.

A bit of zinc primer and some touch up paint on all the holes.

    The inner duct fitted first.

Inside view of the inner duct fitted.

Pre cleaner assembly installed ... and both worm clamps done up from inside the engine bay. Note .. there's not a lot of room to work in here ... especially after a dual battery and a heap of additional wiring.

Snorkel fitted. There's big panel washers on the inside of each stud ... and each one has got a bead of sikaflex on it to seal it in place.

    Looks good from here ...

    ... and in profile.

Flash as Michael Jackson !

Bring on that next water crossing.

    Cheers

Well done Chippy. Glad to see you had enough courage to drill holes in your rig. I certainly didn't! Could not bring myself to do that, needed to have someone else to blame if it didn't line up right! Looks damn fine now. Certainly very crowded in that engine bay with all that wiring.

nice work chippy, that will get her breathing a bit better. u will also get some nice induction noise when under a heavy right foot. but best of all you dont get a gutload of water in her lungs.

Chippy - once again you raise the bar! Another fantastic blow by blow description and graphical representation of a DIY install. I told myself that I would never do a self instal for a snorkel, but after reading your description, I reckon I could give it a go. Hang on . . . I already have a snorkel. However I do have some mates that want one. I will see if I can convince them to have a crack!

                              Cheers - Byrnsie
