  • Cracks in Inner Guards

I have a diesel Prado that has developed cracks in both left and right inner guards, around the opening in the guard for the air intake to air filter and around the mounting points for the aux battery.

On the QAA line I hit a blow out in a sand dune that almost bought the car to standstill. Bash plates bent, bonnet sitting 3-4 mm higher.
A couple of weeks later after having completed the Hay river, the Plenty Highway to Alice via Cattlewater pass, Chambers Pillar, Lambert Centre, the Merenie loop I noticed the cracks in the inner guards. Whether they were caused by the bash into the sand or the entire rough road I’m not sure.

Mr NRMA insurance has come to the party no problems and according to The Toyota dealer, Toyota may consider it a warranty job. Either way it gets fixed.

The vehicle now has 55,000 Ks.
It is a 04-2006 diesel, ARB steel bull bar, Aux battery and OME suspension.

Sorry I wasn’t able to post pics but I have some on this link.

Going by your photos, it would seem that the hit may have caused it.
Huge amount of damage done though.
Gee I hope all turns out well for you mate.
    cheers

My second battery tray caused me some problems breaking the metal on all the mounting points pics on this link
      http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php ... highlight=
I seen another prado do the same thing ( mate of mine)
We both have been on some very corrugated roads, Caye york and Simpson desert, Plenty & Donahugh Highway
I will be mounting my battery in my next prado ( when ever it gets here) on rubber to try to absorb some of the shock. I did not look at the inner guards. I only noticed the damage when I traded it in and I was removing the second battery. My mate only noticed his after he destroyed his prado and was taking off what he could.

        Steel Bull Bar and cracking

Experience with several fleet Prados with ARB steel bull bars suggest that if there is visible cracking in the engine bay area, there will be probably be more cracks in the firewall area and other areas not visible.
Major repairs to the front end where ARB Steel bars are fitted has reulted in Toyota now rejecting warranty claims. Suggest fitting of Toyota alloy bar to avoid warranty issues with Toyota.

All Prados were delivered new from the dealer with ARB bull bars fitted.

There is a 'Sh.. fight' going on between Toyota and ARB. If you wish to join the fray GOOD LUCK.

I believe that unless the (non-toyota) accessories are fitted at the FACTORY, Toyota will not cover them. Non-Toyota branded accessories fitted at the Dealer prior to customer pickup are only coverd by the DEALER warrantee. A great deal of difference I should think. Something to think about when you place your orders.

Those cracks are metal fatigue & that is caused by excessive & constant body flex
Accidents do not cause body cracks

Yep the Toyota Dealers are not Toyota Australia.....unless it suits them

(& I suspect that Toyota Australia aren't Toyota Japan unless it suits them!)

if the dealer sells the car with aftermarket accessories, they are liable.
its there drama to take up the issues with whoever there supplier was.
this is a dealer problem not "toyota" as such.
if you fit the accessorie after delivery, its between you and supplier (unless recomended and fitted at a toyota service centre)

Of course there is a shit fight between ARB and Toyota.

The ARB bar does NOT attach to the body of the vehicle in any way.

I dont see how it could be even considered in the equation unless the extra weight on the front half of the chassis causes it to bend. Also the weight of the sovereign bar is not much less than the ARB bar.

The same problem has been found on cars with the sovereign bar and with the standard bumper set up.

So to write it off as an ARB issue is rather ignorant, however the case with aftermarket non genuine accessories fitted in the warranty period will never change.

Get them fitted before delivery and as already stated, they are covered by the same warranty.

                          Hi Speedcom,
Do you remember what brand of bull bar was attached to the Proado ?
Would be interested in light of this cracking issue.
                          Cheers, Bes.

                            Re: Cracks in Inner Guards

Surprisingly, I don't read anything anymore on pradopoint about the terrible problem of inner guard and firewall cracks. I cannot believe that this problem has gone away all by itself. Here in France it is a well known problem among those who use their Prado's for what they are supposedly made for. But the cracks have even been documented in the case of cars who have never left the asphalt.
Apparently Toyota is denying that there is anything wrong with the design. Interestingly enough, Toyota Competition has developed a kit to reinforce the guards. This kit is for sale and has been successfully installed both by private individuals and by offroad preparation shops. I had it installed on my vehicle, in preparation for my desert trips. As soon as you install a stiffer suspension, the reinforcement of the guards is recommended as well, to resist the extra forces on the body structure.
The kit is sold in France for 325 euros: http://www.axe4.fr/renforts-ailes-kdj120-kdj125.htm
Links to pages showing the installation process: http://jbl33.com/prepa_kdj120/renfort_ailes/index.html or http://jpg44.spaces.live.com/
I thought this might be interesting information for some of you.

That an interesting bit of kit... and it's developed by Toyota?

Wonder what effect it has on the crumple zones (which are what it covers)?

I think the reason you don't hear that much on PP about the cracking is that statistically it's quite rare (as a ratio of cars with/without) it's just those that it happens to scream very loud!! Interestingly there are stock cars with cracks and well used ones without... mine for example has done an estimated 35k kms off road in the last two years and no cracks (check every servive believe me!)

I think if you want to jump sand dunes or do serious rock hopping you have the wrong vehicle. Sure the 120 is a capable off roader/long range tourer but it's no comp truck or desert racer.

What is the Toyota part number for this kit? I wonder if it could be ordered through Toyota Australia?
