  • Rated recovery points

    Guys & Gals

I am looking to join a 4x4 club in Brisbane and one of the requirements before attending the Driver Awareness training is to have rated recovery points.

I have a 2005 GXL Prado - does this have rated recovery points or do I need to go off to ARB/TJM?!

[Apologies if this has been asked before - I could not get the search function to perform properly]

    Cheers
Silver 2005 GXL Prado, Petrol, auto, gold plated rated recovery points, 60ltr Waeco, Vacation Camper, Gunyah side shade, 265/65 17R Pirelli Scorpian ATR tyres (x4) and 1 new Grand Crapper (spare), Max Air II plus still lots of recovery gear!! And PradoPoint sticker!!

Wish list - ARB steel bull bar, 2 inch lift, dual battery system, snorkel, milford cargo barrier, black widow rear draw system and rear lockers as well as new bash plates for the ones I have trashed. Oh and yes a 150!!!

You will need after market ones put on the front, ARB, TJM sell them ($120) and if you have a Hayman Reese type towbar you can use that as a recovery point.
    Cheers, Terry.

Outback ideas is the source of many of these stores. Try them. Front less than $100. Replace you factory recovery point on the rear with the jay shaped point purchased 4wd shop although I think that the standard one is heavy duty and would do the job, but check with your club. I use a special hook in my towbar from "Outback".

        Visited ARB at Nundah today

The advice from there was that the factory fitted front recovery point was fine and would be 'rated'. Hmmmm confused - I was told "don't believe everything you are told"

I have a Hayman Reese towbar and have bought a fitment that allows you to fit a shackle so I should be okay at the rear.

I have a little time before the DA so will get onto the equipment officer

Spender, i was told the same by ARB Nundah, but have been criticised for suggestting on other forums that the toyota ones will suffice. I have been chasing the outback ideas ones but am yet to find a place in brissie who have them except for ARB southside who wanted $220 fitted, i said no thanks.

ask yourself, how can a weld be rated, there is too many variables in welding to "guarantee" that they will do the job
A hook of some sort, on high tensile bolts into a chassis rail (x2) makes somewhat more sense if you think it through
For most light recoveries the welds may probably hold
I would never risk it, I would compare it to playing russian roullette

I am not a welder and have no idea about technological advances that occur in the world of welding, so I don't know. If Toyota made a claim that the welded front recovery points/tie-downs were rated to xxx kgs, then I would accept that. I think most would.

Are there any examples where a weld is rated? In other words, are all welded joints inherently unratable?

Welds are not inherently weak. A correctly formed weld is more than capable of providing a rated join. A quick look at most lifting spreader bars used on construction sites across the country will show that the lugs are welded on. The catch here is that the welding is performed by acredited, professional welders and tested before the bar is load rated.

Outback ideas doesnt seem to deal directly with the public. I get my gear through MAnnell Motors here in Syd. The front recovery hooks cost $110. The rear hook $60. They could sent them on if that was a help.

I've been doing a bit of popping today

I popped into one of the Gold Coast Toyota dealerships, and a salesman tells me that the front recovery points are certainly rated, but he could not tell me their rating. After I explained that some 4x4 clubs require rated recovery points before being permitted to join, he told me to call the following number to get the actual rating figures:
                        • Toyota Customer Relations: 1800 252 097

I feel we should all call this number to a) satisfy ourselves and b) alert Toyota that we're serious about knowing.

To get through the voice-menu quickly say "Customer Advisor" (yep it's one of those voice-activated menu systems). They're open M-F 9-5.

I also popped into our local ARB shop, and he also said the front recovery points on the new Prado are definitely rated. Again, he could not give me specs.

Time-permitting, I will be calling Toyota on Monday.

I've been travelling, so only just now got to contact Toyota.

                              Drum roll please....

After a brief conversation with Craig from Customers Advisors, he was very helpful and very clear. He said, there are no rated recovery points on the current model Prado, unless you add a towbar, in which case the towbar is then rated. The front points are merely for emergency towing only!

To get rated recovery points you must buy aftermarket equipment and it must be attached to the chassis.

That ought to put this one to bed... yes?

Funny, Craig mentioned that he's been getting quite a few calls on this lately. I hope this has been in response to everyone's eagerness to hear the news first-hand for themselves. It's often only after many customers show an interest in something that vendors start paying close attention, which is normal and healthy.

It seems the salesmen at Toyota are still unclear about this, since I was told they were certainly rated. Maybe this will encourage Toyota to send around an internal memo informing their staff of the facts. Better informed salespeople results in better customer service and happier customers.

All the best, and may all your recoveries be safe and successful!
