  • Larger tyres for prado

    hi all,
Just got of the phone to Kai from TCIS insurance brokers and he said that under the 4wd insurance from them you are allowed to go up 1 size in tyres so 265/70/17 would be ok for my 07, d4d 120, auto. Hope this helps.

....that may be but will they insure an unregisterable car since that is a different question. They may register a vehicle with larger than standard tyres thats up to them....some insurers will not. In the fine print I think you will find that the car needs to be registerable else the insurance is null & void.

With the larger tyre on your car, it needs an engineering certificate to be registerable.

So in summary yes they will insure it, but in fine print it will say the vehicle must be registerable. I'd be interested if you asked your local motor authority if oversize tyres are legal & if they aren't, go back to TCIS, annoymously if you want, & asked will you insure my vehicle if it's technically unregisterable?

Truly I wish it was different....but AFAIK its not yet!

    Cheers

Check the ADR's on the size issue as i am sure that has been taken out.

I am sure that you are allowed to go no larger than 2" over standard in NSW

I believe the 50mm over std rule only applies to vehicles classified as light trucks. The rule that may be applicable to a prado is still no more than 15mm over std. The tyre size of 265/70/17 is approximately 26mm larger than std. The NCOP document (allowing 4wd tyres to go 50mm over std) has not been implemented in both QLD and NSW. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hmmmm, if that is the case 50 percent of 4wds on the road are un roadworthy ?? I find that a little odd.......
Have a sticky beak at the amount of Patrols with 285/75/16 tyres, or 100 series for that matter

I have a friend who is a HV inspector with nsw RTA, I will check with him and see what he can give me in electronic format I could post legally.

You will be suprised what a insurance company will let pass. My wife recently wrote off our commodore, i had forgotten to tell them about the car being about 1.5 inch lower that standard and also running alloys... i was packing it that i would be up for replacing my car plus fix the astra convertible she hit, but they said nothing and payed me out... i guess what was on my side was the modifications did not contribute to the accident, and that would have to be my guess would be the same if you had a claim on your prado with bigger tyres. The insurance company would have to prove that the tyres contributed to the accident to affect your insurance.... or then maybe only reduce the claim.

Not a risk I was going to take. I couldn't afford a second Prado if the first was written off & effectively uninsured!

I too wish the National ADRS applied nationally.....

What did it cost to the engineering certificate?

                      $330 inc GST

... other costs involved in getting vehicle legal...

$35 or so can't exactly remember to get rego label reprinted with the certificates info on it.
EDIT: [Additional info] I also had to get a blue slip - a blue slip is for a car currently unregistered & wanting to be registered. All I did was put the tyres on & the car became unregistered. Luckily my plates could stay the same though!

Technically if you go to bigger tyres, then they can't touch anywhere in the full movement of the suspension & steering. Well I already knew on the 90 series that would be the case so I booked the car in the get the caster adjusted to bring the wheels forward. We got about 1cm which was enough for it to stop rubbing unless you really hit a driveway hard at a 45 degree steering angle. $40 for the wheel alignment.

Also the speedo technically cannot under read..... My engineer got me to test it against a GPS. Using the cruise to stabilise the speed whilst looking at the GPS screen, when the speedo read 99km/h, the GPS read 101km/h. He said it was close enough. If I was to put on an AT tyre then it would have been spot-on since they aren't quite as large as the MT's. The calculated difference is 3.4%, so if your speedo is already over-reading on standard tyres by around this amount, then the larger ones should still be OK. Otherwise you would need to look into speedo calibration corrections.

The only other thing is time. Between the tyre place, the Wheel aligner, the Engineer, & the RTA most of the day was gone!

Plus the phone calls - The tyre place didn't know anything about the laws. They just said that they do it all the time. The RTA...knew very little about the laws, & I even pointed out to the guy about a label that you are supposed to put on your windscreen to indicate that the current tyres have a lower speed rating than the ones fitted at the factory which is true for the BFG MT's. He said in 30 years no one has ever ask me about that! Oh and the tyre place is supposed to supply it!

Your tyres must having an equal or higher load index & a speed rating equal to or greater than 140km/h. (only 110km/h in Vic!) The BFG's from memory are 160km/h - its unlikely that the Diesel Prado will ever test this out though - even less likely is the 180km/h standard tyres!

So, it was a battle - but well worth it. I'm expecting 80,000km from these tyres & thats on 95% bitumen. When I go offroad, I'm a lot more comfortable when I see rain clouds ahead & those damn ruts left by the bigger tyred cars!

                      Cheers

                          Hey Richard,

maybe you could get onto LC120_man and have this info added to the technical thread in the general forum. Very valuable info for some members.

Dont forget that for an insurance company to void the claim they have to prove the offending issue caused the accident. This is the same reason why people with bald tyres and rust have been paid out in the past. Saying it wasnt roadworthy is not a sustainable reason. Dont get me wrong I am not saying we should all go out and make our vehicles illegal however as already stated above if it was an issue most 4wds on the road are illegal. For starters every single Hilux with a tyre over 30.9.5 is and even the government ones run 31x10.5
