I have today received - in writing - confirmation from the RMS Technical team that VSI6 'Light Vehicle Modifications' covers all vehicles up to 4.5t gvm, so our 4wds are covered by it. As such, tyre diameter increases of 7% are allowed - going on 265/65R17 diameter of 776mm, we can fit tyres up to 830mm diameter in NSW, meaning 265/70R17 (803mm) are legal. There is also no mention in VSI6 about combined limits re tyres and suspension changes (the only mention re suspension is that vehicle ride height cannot be altered by more than 1/3 of the manufacturers suspension travel in the direction of the ride height change), nor any mention that the changes are not allowed on vehicles with ESC. Just in time too, as I'm due for new rubber soon, and 275/65R17 isn't well supported in aggressive tread tyres.

        That sounds like great news.
Would you be able to put a copy of the letter up on the forum?

Yep, that's the link to the VSI6 document.

The 'writing' is email, not a letter - essentially the last email in the trail reads:

            "Steve

A light vehicle is anything up to 4.5GVM, yes yours is a light vehicle.

            Jonathan
            Technical Enquiries"

So just to be sure a '07 120series D4D that is stock (suspension and height etc) along with standard front bumper will allow me to fit 265/70R17 with no rubbing or any other issues?
Not interested in regulations etc as I live in NZ just want to know if the will fit fine.

You should have no problems at all with that. Put that size on my first Prado pre lift without issue.

Isn't 265/70/R17 the size for Grande Tyres?

No, standard Grande tyres are 265/65/17, same as the GXL.

Just fitted 265/70/R17 BFG A/T's on my 120 with standard suspension. No worries at all.

Also fits the spare wheel carrier without adjustment

                      Cheers, Scott

That's surprising, I had to space mine out a bit, which is not hard to do.

                          Yeah, I was too.

I'd read posts here where owners had done the same thing, but I didn't need to.

I also mentioned this to the tyre guys and they were surprised to think they need to, as they said, it's the profile that's increased not the width.

                          Cheers, Scott

From memory mine fouled on the rear windscreen wiper. It was a bit of a panic at the time as I think it was only a day or 2 before we headed to the Kimberly.

                            Cheers Andrew

That surprised me too. When I had the 265/70s fitted at delivery the cowboys jammed the rim on the bracket with some longer bolts that didn't work at all. Everything was out of alignment. I ended up welding on the spacers and also completly discarding the useless plastic trim that sits behind the wheel. It only serves to trap stones against the paintwork.
