  • ARB Flares, for a GX

Hi everyone, this is my inaugural post, there's some great info on here for us Prado lovers and i have been getting a great education reading everybodies posts!.

Now i have a 2005 GX 3l turbo diesal and i am looking at upgrading her boots to something a little more luscious. As the GX doesn't have the flares that the GLX does, i am limitted to the width of tyre i can legally put on it due to tyre over hang outside the guards. I read in last years catalogue the price for ARB fiberglass wheel arch flares was around $800 bucks, this was for a black or white, rather generic type of flare as seen on Late model Tritons, Trusty 80 series, the kind that just follows the line of the guard, if you know what i mean.
This year ARB have raised the price too $2033 and are calling them fiberglass body flares and they need to be colour coded to the colour of your truck.

I figure that the rise in price and different wording means that they are seeing a market for converting GX looking Prados into the more fashionable GLX type, and the obvious benefit of being able to re-boot your truck with some serious rubber.

Ringing my ARB central store here in Perth the guy on the phone didn't really have a clue what i was on about, he was about to give up on me when i asked him if he could ask someone else in the store if they know anything about them. The answer came back that yes they do make your GX look like a GLX. Their performance over the phone has not instilled in me confidence in their knowledge of the product and further their ability to install it on my baby.

Has any one looked at this latest flare kit?
Does it make your GX look like a GLX?
Has any of our Perth Prado owners had much to do with ARB here in Osborne Park?

Thanks in advance guys for your reply's

    Hi Geoff
I've got the same problem and also chasing decent after market flares. I once seen a GX in Newcaslte with best looking aftermarket flares
on it they fitted perfect it even had extension's to the rear bar . They where coloured the same grey as the bumpers i assume they were ARB
I whish i had more time i would have pulled him over to just confirm were
he got them from. They looked that original i thought toyota made them.
Then only way is to put flexiflares on which i'am tyring not to do.

A while ago I stumbled across an article about installing flares on a GX. Since then, the images have disappeared, but it might give you a few leads on the possibilities?

          geoff,
          Just food for thought,
You may already be aware but if you are going upgrade your boots, think about rim size (width) as the earlier GX only have 6" width.
If you fit the later 265/65x17 fitment you will require 7 1/2" wide rims & just to add to that you will have roughly a 4% speedo error. (you will be traveling Faster than what your speedo states)

Could become expensive in more ways than one.

          Cheers,

i bought my gx with the skinnys on and replaced them with the gxl wheels and no flares. the tread is just inside the guards and the side wall is just stickin out. its just a personal opinion but i think they dont need flares. a copper would have to be pretty picky to get ya, and it looks a bit fatter, if ya know wat i mean. as to speedo error my speedo is out 1kmh it 60kmh, at 100kmh its out 2kmh. so my gps says so.

That's fine if you don't plan to leave the black-top very often, but I found that I was losing a lot of paint around the edge of the guard from stone chips. The flares also keep the car a lot cleaner - which is good for me as I spent considerable time in the dirt and get sick of cleaning it all the time

                  Cheers for that Matt

Mate any chance of seeing some more pics? Some overall pics would be good! I am undecided on which flare to install.

I have noticed ARB's flare kit has gone up by half this year it's now around $2000, TJM's is half that.
What frustrates me is there is no good pictures of the vehicles with the kits installed, just rear quarter or front quarter shots.

Has any one got any shots of their truck with the plastic on????

                  Cheers Geoff

                      GX FLARES

After some looking I have found that FRP (Fibre Glass Replacement Panels ) in QLD make a factory replica . I believe it may be the same as the units that some big names sell under their own name .
According to their ad in "Just Parts " mag the cost is $578 + freight .

I have a set of flares from frp, the only problem is that if you have a bull bar on your gx it wont match the flares. if you look in this thread you see my car with black frp flares.
