timing belt warning light

    If you change the oil & filter regularly with quality oil, a modern vehicle's timing chain should outlast the vehicle.

      Not so with the pajero. Been a few chains snap causing major engine damage and have been vehicles that have been well serviced. One sitting at the Nepean Motor Group at the moment with exact problem and of course just out of warranty. Owner not happy I can tell you. Going to be a huge bill.... Have never heard of one snapping on a Prado, well not yet anyway... Cheers Steve

        You have to watch it with Mitsu's. I know of one that started making all sorts of ugly noises and finally refused to proceed one morning. Upon closer inspection it was obvious that the timing chain (or was it the balance chain??) tensioner had never been adjusted and she had finally jumped the cogs. This Pajero was always dealer serviced, so a call to the dealership elicited the response "that model has an automatic tensioner" Unable to be convinced, the service manager had to virtually be threatened with GBH before he would come out and look. When he saw it for himself the excuse was that the shop manual for that model said it was automatic, so it was never checked. Mitsubishi have a bit of a history of putting cars together from whatever is left in the parts bins at model change time, hence some models (L300 IIRC?) can have two or three possible timing belts depending on what cogs were fitted. You pretty much have to take the cog to the parts dept to match it, the month/year of manufacture may not be enough to source the parts, and the shop manual may or may not apply to your particular vehicle.

          Did my 1kz timing belt last weekend. Pretty simple DIY job as long as you trust yourself to follow instructions. I got my directions from here: http://www.landcruiserclub.net/forum...lts-amp-chains

          I cut the old belt (cut on tensioner side so as not to get things out of alignment) and unbolted the tensioner and then re-compressed it with a G-Clamp. Easy as. I didn't replace then idler oulley and now that is playing on my mind. It was rolling smoothly (but not loosely) and pivoting was very free, but I've never played with a new one so I have nothing to compare to. Another thing I didn't do was remove the bash plate, fan and fan shroud. My banged up knuckles can attest to the fact it would be a good idea to at least remove the fan and shroud to give you much better access, especially if you are doing the alternator and aircon belts at the same time as I did.

          Thanks to damonat for the reset procedure. Although my light hasn't come on yet (i'm at 144k) I went through the reset procedure. Will see if the light comes on at 150k or not?

            That is what I thought, we do not need a timing belt change on the 120s engine, at least that is what the dealer told me. How else can I tell if the water pump requires replacement? Should it be changed as a preventative measure?

                Yep gotta give a big thumbs up to this forum in helping me get a head change and timing belt all sorted.
                KZ-TE,ended up making a good car from what a previous owner had given up on.

                  does anyone recommend a good strong timing belt? my dad is a 40 yr roadside service and he tells me nothing but dayco.

                    Don't you listen to your dad lol, dayco have been around for a long time but I have used other products of theirs (eg viscous clutch coupling) and was crap. Myself I only ever buy genuine...probably find a lot of different branded parts are made by the same manufacturer anyway... Cheers Steve
