  • How do you replace the timing belt on the D4D?

Could somebody please post up a 'How To' on how to change the timing belt, preferably with lots of pics? Although a novice, I'm usually game enough to do these things myself providing the instructions are clear. You can guess I'm the sort of person who hates to pay for labour costs. :!:

I'm betting the members here would also find such info very beneficial.

    Cheers

Get the dealership to do the changeout.. as a diesel mechanic of now 18 years, I at a loss to try and answer some of the questions that pop up in the diesel engine section??

Get a trades qualified and experienced dealer workshop, who has the experience, knowledge, tooling and warranty backup to handle this job. It's not a task for the backyarder, ie: valves smashing into pistons (when the timing is stuffed up) equals need new engine..... Trust me.. I work on 70 litre, V16, 3000 horsepower, quad turbo engines and the principal is the same.

Do it correct, the first time and don't skimp on maintenance costs.. about $450 @ Toyota to do the job..
Understand what your saying here and I agree with your premise - we're dealing with a pretty expensive vehicle.

I stumbled across this forum as it just so happens I bought a spare timing belt (as well as radiator hoses and clips) as a spare(s) just in case the one(s) I have at the moment break on me whilst 4wd-ing. I assuming the timing belt is the one visible on the front of the engine.

So do you suggest I take my vehicle to Toyota, get them to replace the old belt with the new and keep the old one as a spare?

Re: How do you replace the timing belt on the D4D?

I think there is some confusion here - the post is actually about the drive belt - not the timing belt. The drive belt is the one at the front of the engine that you can see - it drives the pulleys of the fan, airconditioner, alternator, power sterring etc. The timing belt is inside the engine - under the timing belt cover and as rightly stated not for the average bloke to have fun with. Check the other post on "Changing the Drive belt" and you will have yur answer.

Yes, only if you sit the bonnet on top of it.

I did mine a few weeks back (sorry no pic's) But i just followed these instructions posted by damonat and just made sure I followed it to a tee. Do a search for timing belt warning light and its the last post in it.

Re: How do you replace the timing belt on the D4D?

Just rehashing an old thread to save filing up topic with repeated info.

Replaced timing belt last week 150k(05 GXL diesel). Once cover was removed, I was shocked to see how loose the tension on the belt was.
It appeared the tensioner had seen its life span and only just made the 150k.
I replaced the idler, belt (after market) and tensioner (genuine) with new items and reset counter to 120k for next replacement.

Now my thoughts (this is just my opinion), having done many timing belt changes on turbo/non turbo subaru motors the belt never seems to be the issue of failures/breakages. It is more commonly than not the idlers/tensioners that give in before the belt, especially when there is so many.

So with this in mind,I applied this logic to the Prado engine 1 belt, 1 idler, 1 tensioner. I have faith in the belt lasting 120k easy, the idler was in good condition when removed but has 150k of life already and wasn't worth taking the risk of reusing, so was replaced with a new one.
Then the tensioner and this is just my opinion again, only just lasted the advertised lifespan of 150k. So with this in mind I will remove the timing cover and check the tensioner/tension of the belt at half life of 60k and replace at 120k from now on.

                  Hope this helps, thoughts??

Re: How do you replace the timing belt on the D4D?

I changed the timing belt on my old 3 series BMW a couple of times (every 60,000km) and each time the belt and the tensioner looked and felt in pristine condition but were changed anyway. The job itself is pretty easy and straight forward and the damage caused is scary if the belt lets go. Anyway earlier this year I was getting ready to do the 200,000km service on the ex work V6 Rodeo dual cab the next weekend and #1 son read out the necessary work to be done. Including the timing belt. Now I made sure the first belt had been changed before I bought the thing (sticker under the bonnet and appropriate words in the book) and didn't think much of it. As I didn't have the time to do such a big service I had a friend's friend (mobile mechanic) do the work. #1 son watched the service. The timing belt had two teeth missing and the idler bearing was quite sad. No worries out with the the old and in with the new. Then after the service was completed I read the service book carefully. The belt change was for the 4 cylinder not the 6 cylinder which was previously done at 160,000km. So only 40,000km out of the replacement belt? Nah I don't think so, I reckon it wasn't changed at 160,000km at all. Very lucky indeed.
