Are you not having uneven wear on the tyres running them at 45 psi, or is your vehicle constantly heavily loaded? It must also be quite a harsh ride at those kind of pressures.

The tyres are checked fortnightly and maintained at 45 psi now. The vehicle was averaging in the high 11's per 100km and has now achieved two runs of 11.3-11.4 L/ 100 km. Over 5 months of ownership, my 1KZ has returned an average of 11.57 L / 100 km, which has included quick runs at 110km/h between Albury and Canberra towing a 6x4 with tools and camping gear, 4wding in the Brindabellas and running around town. My only frustration remains with the fuel gauges reading empty, only to get to the pump and put only 130 L in to fill! Dodgy gauges haha
45psi is way too high, drop it by 5psi.
The fuel gauge is fine, they do that so that you dont run out of fuel, and also for the reason of reducing the chance of crap from the tank getting sucked into the pump and into the fuel lines.

Big thanks to Bob Jane, shit advice and readily given. 40 psi it is then. The tyres are about shagged anyway. Doesn't seem too rough considering very little weight. Thanks for the heads up crooza

Hi Fellas. I reacon I could get around 150 km out of the dregs once my orange light comes on - can only ever get 75 litres in no matter what I do - still another 15 or so lurking in there somewhere. Cheers.

              Unifilter is the go...

Bit the bullet a few weeks ago and bought a foam Unifilter to replace the OEM filter. I was looking for power and economy and I seem to have got a little better economy rather than both. A trip from Canberra to the NSW South Coast recorded my best fuel economy thus far. I don't have exact figures but I got 1250 km without having the fuel light come on, indicating that I still had a theoretical 100 km of fuel left. This gives me 10 l/100 km figures compared to the usual 11.5-12.0 L/ 100 km. Driving ranged from very hilly (ie. Clyde Mountain for those familiar), low range in the Shallow Crossing/Nelligen area and long highway runs along the Pacific Hwy. Further measurements will confirm that these filters are really an improvement on the OEM filter. For $100, I'm pretty happy. Perhaps those guys looking to increase fuel economy should have a look at these, along with improved exhaust flow and new injectors.

Im new to the forum and I am debating between purchasing an 01 Prado auto 3lt and a 06 Pajero auto 3.2.
I was hoping someone could update this thread with new consumption figures since its been over three years since anyone posted their economy numbers.
The Prado is a Grande and has apparently ticked over 308k. I and the dealer have no idea if/when the timing belt was last done. it is also stock and the asking price drive away is $13700
Also when do the timing belts need to be changed, 100k 150k 200k?
                regards

I've got a 2002 manual RV 250,000 kms on the clock (still with original injectors), 2 inch lift, 265/75 R16 BFG MTs, 2.75 inch Beaudesert exhaust, bullbar, dual batteries, loaded drawers and I'm averaging around 12l/100 kms around town. Last year on the Canning Stock Route I averaged around 15l/100 kms.

Timing belt needs changing every 150k from memory.

Good to hear someone who is honest about fuel usage Andy. I have a 2010 D4D. 100 000Km, and am pretty disappointed with the fuel usage. My 1996 2.8 TD Patrol did about the same as my Prado and with only a marginal performance increase.

                        Figures are:

Town = 13l/100K, sometimes worse at the height of summer with air con running!
                        Highway 100Km/h = 9.8l/100Km
                        Highway 110Km/h = 10.6l/100Km
Recent Central/Simpson Trip with a roof rack worst was 17l/100Km in the desert, on good dirt roads it was generally 12l/100Km

Granted, I am running bigger tyres (265/70R17) as well as dual battery and steel bar, no winch though.

My theory is that the older diesel engines were limited by low pressure fuel pump (80psi) and mechanicalk injectors so you just couldn't jam more than about 16/17 l/100Km into the motor. My D4D can squeeze up to 30l/100Km so the poor economy makes sense really.

I have a 2000 TD manual RV and have been keeping a fuel log for last 12 months. I have steel bar, drawers, roof rack, 3 car seats and a fair bit or general gear in back including the engel most of the time. I have also put on a 32 inch set of cooper stt's so they probably haven't helped economy.

My driving is fairly mixed between highway, town, off-road and towing so I can't really isolate any more specifically. Fuel figures for last 12 months as follows:

l/100 km 13.95 average. 12.06 was best. 16.75 was worst (fully loaded trip away with camper). This averages out at 17 cents per kilometre, considering my average purchase price of $1.24 over same time period.

I'm generally not overly happy with the economy of the 1kz, but it has been bullet proof...

I'm certainly planning some mods when the coin allows as I'd like to improve the economy.

When I did the Canning Stock Route last year my vehicle used less diesel between Billiluna and Kunawaritji (which was by far the hardest stretch) than a short wheel base 150 series D4D. Mind you, I was by myself and there was two in the shorty.

Thanks for all of the input guys. 11.5 sounds about average around town from what I have read. That's for a daily stock 120 auto.
