  • Centre Console: How does one pull it apart?

I have my dual battery system controller over a switch blank (removed) in the centre console, just in front of the gear selector (Auto). It's rattling, and annoying the living daylights out of us. Apart from that, and even though it's a diesel, all is pretty quiet in there...

Can anyone give me detailed, step-by-step, "for dummies" who have never successfully done this kind of thing before, instructions on how to get the centre console apart to tighten this thing up before it drives us absolutely batty.

The last time I attempted this kind of thing, it ended in disaster and cost us a fortune!

    Can anyone please help me?

      Undo gear knob by unscrewing.
Undo low range stick by unscrewing.
Under the cup holders at the centre console there are 2 screws-undo.

      Now the tricky part

On either side of the console there are silver bits. These do come out seperatly but I have found that if you pull up on the rear of the console above the cup holder the silver bits will pop off. Pull them back towards the rear of the car gently.
The black centre section will then lift off.
If you have an auto beware of electrical connectors for the grear shift. (Don't know if there are any on the manual)

Some of the clips can be quite stubborn and you will feel like you are going to break something but perservere and you will get there.

This one line, to me, SCREAMS "Do not do this unsupervised...". Fortunately (or unfortunately) the front accessories socket which was re-wired when the iDBS controller went in seems to be dead within far too quickly a time, so I'm going to get the auto-electrician to have a look-see and he'll likely tighten it up for me while he's there, if I ask him sweatly.

(After all, he was the one who installed it in the first place and that was only about 12 months ago...)

And, wouldn't you know it.... My father (and Mother) - Grey Nomads - have gone away... again.

Cheeky old bugger (father) always rings me at work just to say "Pay plenty of taxes" before hanging up. Got my own back on him though. Changed desks, and therefore phones, and he rang up today and did that to the guy I swapped with! I just wet myself laughing at both of them!

I have had mine apart several times now and it is fairly easy.

I use a small thin paint scraper and poke it between the edge of the silver piece closest to the drivers and passenger seat and carefully lever it upwards. Then remove the rubber mat from the bottom of the cup holder and undo the 2 screws, which will allow the next section to be lifted upwards after you remove the gear stick knobs.

The rest is a similar operation with it all unclipping. The main centre box section under the lid also has 2 screws and when undone, this allows this section of the console to be moved towards the rear seats.

The only problem I had when I lifterd the section from around the gear levers, a piec of matting (about 1 cm x 2 cm) fell out and I haven't had time to glue it back in yet and I am not exactly sure of what function it serves. I will have to pull it all apart soon to fit the flush mount speaker in to the section under the ashtray so will look at it then.

If you don't have a paint scraper on hand, visit one of the kitchen drawers, spatulas and plastic stirrers make great trim removers. Just don't get caught by the Swiss Army Knife (wife).

Bamboo skewers work for me - have a look in the kitchen drawers. Strong enough to do the job but soft enough to not cause damage.
