    Rob,
The largest battery frame size that fits in the D4D is a N70. The largest readily available N70 lead acid battery is 105AH. Though after a bit of searching I found a 120AH, which I have installed.

Interesting, I have searched and searched and cannot find a 120 a/h battery with n70 case. The best I can find is a 100a/h remco. What brand is your 120a/h. Thanks

        Starcees,

The brand of a Battery is USA Battery (Battery World item number GC27TMX). I got it from Battery World O'Connor (Perth). But I think they are a national franchise so there should be one in your area. If you want me you chase up more info. just let me know.

            Are these batteries deep cycle?

My friendly auto sparky recommended I look at a gel battery - says they are a cranking battery that you can use like a deep cycle.

                About $280.

                Anyone tried one?

Gel, AGM, VRLA. They are very good batteries, very low internal resistance therefore high current capability.

Someone raised concerns over their physical strength - whether they can put up with the pounding in a 4WD. Don't know the answer to this one off the top of my head. I think there might be some other posts on here about them.

I am still waiting for my prado at this stage, so in the meantime I have spent some serious time toying with the electrics of the boat.
Currently my boat has had the problem of leaking battery acid (boat bounces too much on country roads) which over time has caused corrosion and made a hole.  My current vehicle Hilux also had the battery acid leaking from the air vents whilst travelling over corrugations, which has also caused the battery acid effect on everything below it. So to solve the issues once and for all I have looked into sealed batteries.
I have tried to study the benefits of AGM, VRLA and Gel and generally you will find that they all have benefits.
From the outset the cost is way higher, however the batteries charge quicker, last longer, and most offer both starting and deep cycle capabilities - ideal for my boat. It is also interesting that most are rated for general purpose use which includes marine, whilst some are specifally designed only for marine. Surely if they can bounce around in a boat they would last in a fourby. :?: :?:
Most of these sealed batteries advertise that they can be charged quickly with a fair amount of current, all with minimal amounts of gasses produced. This would make them ideal for confined spaces, which in turn would quite possibly be bloody hot in a boat. Cant see why under the car bonnet should be too different.
I dont think the Hilux will get one of these sealed batteries yet but it is definately the go for the boat.
Just out of curiosity has anyone actually used one of these modern batteries as a start battery in their Prado??

I have not used my AGM camper trailer batteries in the Prado yet due to one thing that AGM's hate and Diesels have a lot of .... heat. I cant speak for other types though. 8)

I see Optima states that it has superior cold and hot weather performance verses conventional batteries and also says that it is 14 times more resistant to shock and vibration. This brand is AGM and the lead layers are wrapped spirally, which is it's claim to fame and may work better at temperatures. - This might be just their advertising too.

I don't know if it's of any help,

But here is a little info on RAC Batteries, which are the same you will get in any state if you buy from your Roadside Assistance membership company.

                          http://rac.com.au/files/battery_1.pdf

I can personally vouch for these as I worked for the RAC for a little over 8 years and installed more than my fair share.
