Just curious but has any tried a make it yourself style kit?

I was having a look on the Jaycar website recently and came across the following for $45.00:
          Adaptive Turbo Timer

Dosn't seem to have a nice display but just curious if anyone has tried something like this?

              Re: Turbo timers

I spoke with my insurance company (CGU) last week, they advised that if I were to include a turbo timer as an addition, it would cost be double the excess, and also a 20 or 25% increase in my yearly premium. When I asked if I didn't include it and it was 'found out' their basic answer was they wouldn't cover my insurance.
She did say that if I could find somewhere/someone that factory fitted the turbo timer, then to call her back and let her know!
So all those with TT, do you declare the timer with your insurance or do you run the risk?
Funnily enough when she put me on hold to speak to their underwriter or another decision maker, the other person said if they had a 4wd they also would have one fitted.

                  Hi Jason,
I reckon if you where to ring them back and speak to someone else you would get a different story. A lot of insurance sales people have no idea about what anything does and what benefits it provides. Would be good to know if insurance will cover a replacement turbo if it dies from not cooling down after doing a bit of work. Sometimes telling them the purpose of the device can actually help them understand and talk to the underwriter and then present a much better price.

                    Hi Nick,
Unfortunately they did speak to their underwriter and even the individual that took the call for the underwriter said they would have a TT on if they owned a 4WD, the underwriter (the company) would cover it only if I could prove that an option exists for the manufacturer to fit one or otherwise I pay an extra 25% increase in premium..

                      Re: Turbo timers

I personally am not going to bother with a TT - given the issues of legal / insurance aspects I don't want to give anyone the opportunity to invalidate a claim on some dodgey issue.

Sitting in the car for a couple of minutes doesn't bother me in the slightest!

                          Re: Turbo timers

I've read the Qld regulation detail - all it says is that it is illegal to leave a vehicle unattended while the engine is running. No mention of TT being illegal whatsoever. With the Prado you can't lock the vehicle with the timer running so you are not going to leave it unlocked - that is - unattended ...are you. (unless you are on someone's farm).

There is no basis for the insurance company to take such a line....but I wouldn't argue, just change companies.

Not so simple.. You also need to review the fine print of what is "unattended"... And how it sits if it was attended by a child, while you have ducked inside to get ya lotto... Opps... Park Vs Neutral Vs handbrake = potential for big problems.. Australia is now the second highest for legal action..

At the end of the day it is more about - commercial type systems and where heavy loads are always being applied applied.. If I have done some hard work on teh sand for eg... When stopped, I just leave it running for a moment or two, while I get a cold drink... Nothing too hard about that

Let's clear this up once and for all....

Turbo timers have never been allowed under ADR's (Australian Design Rules) and are thus illegal/unroadworthy in every state and territory. That's why they have never been factory fit or available as a genuine accessory.

                              To quote the relevant ADR:

ADR 25 - Turbo timers are not to be fitted to vehicles manufactured on or after 1 January 1972
(ADR 25 Anti-Theft Locks). ADR 25 requires that the normal function of the engine only occurs when the ignition lock is in the engine ON position
                              .

I have four Mack trucks all fitted with factory turbo timers (made in Os), central locking works with key's out and motor running on the timer.
Wonder if that ADR does'nt apply to trucks?
