    Hi Gingerbeer,
I use my grey matter as the Turbo Timer, let it idle for up to minute depending on the trip. OK for up spec WRX's, Skylines etc. just another gadget to fail.

I'd just get an EGT (Exhast Gas Temp.) gauge and idle it till the temp drops. This slso has the advantage of of letting you know if things start getting hot when towing or doing sand work.

        turbo timers

I share your concern , clifton, for extra stuff that may fail. I also am thinking of the trouble and strife who probably drives it more than me, and is unlikely to to remember to let it idle. (Not that my memory is much better after driving petrols for 30 years).

I spoke to a fellow from ARB today. He says that they use a Bogard timer that plugs straight into the ignition. No wires to cut, scotch clip or whatever. I recall reading another post which said the same. This sounds good to me, if someone has taken the trouble to do a plug and play unit. Hopefully it will be reliable. Would be nice if it replaced a blank switch space though.

They're not required & are illegal, even performance cars these days don't need them. Search the 'net, every car related forum has a thread asking "do I need a turbo timer?".

There have been a few requests for pics on the installation of turbo timers.
Although this is my ARB timer I guess apart from appearances the process would be the same.

All turbos run bloody hot. when you shut them off they are just sitting there hot with heat trying to pour out of them. The manual states to let them idle after heavy load or high speed work. They can get literally hotter than red hot. If a turbo was shut off at those temps the lubrication of the shaft would just burn up. Letting them cool just makes sense to me, right or wrong mine does it automatically, unless I stall it up a snotty hill or hit the stop button etc.

I personally haven't had a problem with a turbo before, but a friend of ours did a turbo on a trip and it cost them plenty. Would a timer have stopped this????? I'm not taking the risk.

Maybe a turbo expert could list some pros and cons..

roughly what sort of $'s do these set you back Jeff? seen cheapies on ebay for 70-120, i'd guess ARB at around $400?

It was a tad over $200, but you pay more if you want them to install.

I did buy a heap of other stuff that day so they may have knocked a bit off it as well.

It was about 2 years ago, so hope I didnt miss anything major.

Pretty sure its just the plugs & module in a pre assembled wiring harness, & the head unit. with phone line type plugs between the head unit and module.
All you need to note is to disconnect the battery, and reset the windows and clock etc afterwards. truly plug and play.

                            Jeff.

                              Turbo Timers

Some previous threads discuss the necessity of turbo timers among other things. On a recent holiday (early May 2008) I ran into a fellow who is a diesel mechanic by trade and is about to take up a a promotion to high up within Detroit Diesel Queensland. So do Detroit diesels use turbo timers? I asked. The answer was "YES". Why? He virtually quoted the Prado handbook recommendations.

Also I have a strong suspicion that although it may be illegal to leave your car running while unattended, I doubt that timers themselves are illegal. One day when I get some time I 'll chase up the exact wording in the Traffic Regulations. If timers were illegal because someone might leave the vehicle unattended, using that logic, no street vehicle should be manufactured that could go over 100kph.

has anyone got instructions for the ebay type Miccon turbo timers.
i've just gotten 1 (2nd hand) and don't have the wiring diagram or combination.
i done a search, and this is the closest i came to the answer.
