I had heard that that we dont need one. Am I correct or should I be looking into getting one?

      embi,
If the engine has been working hard, e.g. high speed or towing you should always let the the engine idle for a short period to let the turbo cool down.
There is a small note on this in the 2007 Hand book (page246)
Idle time up to 2 minutes for harder driving situations.

Personally I don't like timers as I have seen the aftermath after children were left unattended in a vehicle with engine running on a timer.
I must admit it is a bit harder to engage drive in the Prado & you should not leave the children unattended (BUT)???

      Cheers,

Actually that bit about the kids is not really a turbo timer fault but more of a child supervising fault.

          turbo timer

          Dear all,
It is my understanding that insurance companies do not like them and will not insure the car. Is this true?

Correct, Some insurance companies will not insure vehicles with them as they can leave the vehicle running when you are not in it.

How ridiculous is that, for normal driving mine runs for 30 secs(min setting) its off before I open the front door.
And there is a big red stop button if you don't need it to run on at all.

Insurance companies...... cant live without em,,, cant shoot em.

I've just enquired with NRMA about adding a turbo timer and they WILL cover it.

Ask for it in writing, because they are actually illegal if car is left running without you in the drivers seat.

I agree with piggy. Leaving a running vehicle unattended is illegal. The insurnace might cover you but the law won't.

That said I had one on a turbo pulsar (!) and it was great. Only time I had a problem was because you get so used to it running after you walk off that i left the keys in it and came back 2 hours later to find it still running.... ops:

Turbo Timer as per Ebay unit

I have fitted one of these units to my 2005 120 3.0 Grande and while the install was testing at times, the result is very good and took under one hour for the complete install. The unit has a digital display and times from 1 to 9 minutes or you can push the override button to shut the unit off straight away. It is a very neat unit and uses a spare button hole next to the dash illumination rehostat.
My only difficulty was the instructions... They were in Malaysian, but a quick visit to the local Malaysian take away and 20 minutes later I had a hot feed for the family and the translation!! all for under $20.00.
There are the usual cautions, but one can't legislate against stupidity, and I would hope that a little nouse will prevail.
All in all, highly recommended, especially for those with significant others that drive at full bottle and then desire to shut the engine off as soon as they pull up.
More than happy to post pics of the install if any one is interested...

I have mine inssured with NRMA and the turbo timer is actually writen on the polisy as an accesory.
My alarm also interacts with the timer, and if the alarm goes off before the engine has stoped it will stop the engine and imobelise it.

                              turbo timers

                              Evening All,

What a great site this is. Has info on just about everything. I've just purchased my pride and joy and noted in the handbook about idling for a few minutes before swith off, which brings me to this topic.

Miccon unit on ebay looks great how it's integrated into the dash, but "Malaysian instructions" (thread from spence) sounds dodgy?

What is the safest (electronically) to use? and does it affect your warranty? Also I have seen reports of "side" affects.
