  • I tried that method 5-6 times but just waited and waited for the light to go off and it wouldnt, good instructions though to tell you to start the car with working key to start again, and the in out count being 5 times in, the other instructions on here said 4 times.

    • When I spoke to the guy at the locksmiths he said the most important thing when doing the steps was to try to do it in a rhythmic manner. Sort of like each step at the same interval to the beat of a drum. Hope that makes sense. Did you get the key from the same place as I did?

      • I think i paid about $42 on ebay, the shell seems to be good quality, i programmed the central locking side easy enough, 3rd go i think.
I have tried different paces, slow and quick, as you know you get better at it after a while. You know when you miss a step as it goes in to the rhythmic steady flash of the
dash light, not the flash flash .....flash, when its in programming mode. It just seems to 'hang' as if it is waiting for another step, which is why i thought turning the new key from off to acc at the end, i saw that mentioned in another thread i think, the guy was not sure what he did but got it working.
have you seen the other guides with accelerator and brake pedal steps?

Haven't seen any other methods. Are you sure it is the correct transponder for your model. There is a change around sept 2004. Not sure if transponders from different suppliers have different programming methods though.

          • Yeah, if my central locking works with the new key its the right one, mine is a 2006 GX, it was 50176 or something, i had a working 2 button key but the central locking part died so i had better get a spare in case the immobiliser chip stops as well, i will keep trying and hopefully jag it, and like you said, maybe get a rhythm going, how many goes did it take you?

After 09/2004 it should be a 50171. Have a look at the link in the quoted section reply #133. If you scroll down the page a bit it gives detail on what numbers and where to find them on your original transponder. Make sure they match your new one.

                Edit. Here it is...
To check this is correct key for your car you can pop open your existing key case cover and check number stamped be on remote part number should be "50171" and "42050"
Please check this before purchasing- DO NOT BUY IF THIS NUMBER IS NOT STAMPED ON REMOTE
                Please Note

This key is not compatible with the remote key which has "G" stamped on the blade nearby the case.

                  • Pretty sure the "g" is for pre 09/04. Best of luck with it. Did the seller give you any instructions with it?

                    • The ebay seller has the same instructions that you used, in out with key, open door 6 times etc.
Cant get it to work, so the cost rises, seems i have to take it to a workshop with OBD2 reader.
It might end up costing the same as a Toyota one!
On another matter, does anyone use Firefox and post on here? I cant, i have to use Chrome to get a reply box up i can type in.

I went to Toyota and asked the service guy, he said they could do it but after he told me a minor service was $289 i didnt bother asking how much it was to program a key.
he also said it is possible that the car already has 5 registered keys to it so it is full up. I dont think im brave enough to use the key wiping program just in case i cant re-register a working key. I am the 3rd owner of the car and it used to be a govt vehicle so it is possible they lost and registered more keys for it, i have a valet key and one black one but need a spare black key.

                        • programming

Just tried again but no luck, one thing to add to the programming sequence,
You know when you are in programming mode, when after you have done the 6x door open shut,
you take out the working key of the ignition and the red light on the dash stays on solid, not flashing,
then insert the new key to be programmed, and it goes in to the flash, flash , pause ,flash sequence,
instead of the steady flash of the normal immobiliser on.
I would say in my case the car already has 5 keys registered, and will not accept another.

                          • Ok, more bad news, i took the key to an auto locksmith, and he says the key reads ok on his machine but the car wont accept it. He cleared all the existing keys off the ECU and started again but it would not pair. He re-programmed my master key so i could drive home. He recommends i use my grey sub key in case i lose my master key, then i will be in big trouble. He did not charge me for his time, but i have an almost useless key that will only open the doors.
I asked Toyota what they charge to program a key and it was $155, their standard hourly rate. Im glad i didnt go there, they probably would not be able to program it either and slug me $80 for their time.

                            • I am getting a bit of info about the key programming so i will share it here for anyone else.
The Auto locksmith cleared all the registered keys from the ecu, then re programmed my black master key, he had all the reader equipment in the car with the door closed so i didnt see what he was doing.
I did not have my grey valet/sub key with me at the time so i have recently re programmed that to see how easy it was.
The instructions are right, in out 4 times then 5th time back in and left in while you start the 6x door sequence,
Take the key out and for a second or 2 the immobiliser light stays on solid, insert the key to be registered before it starts flashing.
While it is solid you are in programming mode and the flash will change to flash flash pause flash, different to the usual steady flash.
My grey key was programmed in about 10-20 seconds, when the flashing light went out.
The new ebay key will not register, they are sending me a new transponder to try, this time i will try programming the immobilser before the central locking to see if that makes a difference, it shouldnt but who knows?
At least i know the instructions are right now.
