  • 90s LPG 3.4 or diesel. that is the q.....

    Hi
    I have a 98 2.7 petrol with 265/75’ MTs & 2” lift that I am getting at best 15L/100 from.
Given the fuel prices and this cars getting on a bit (255ks) and apparently the 3rzFE is possibly the worst engine in the entire world to put gas on.
im thinking its time to trade up.

    The q is…. 3.4L on LPG or diesel…

Budgets 30g. and that’s gotta have me completely setup….

Your opionins would be helpful, expecially on the LPG V6 part…

    Hi ya Andrew...

Can't help with the LPG or diesel bits but my '98 3.4L auto returns 13.01L/100 over the last 33,000klm's.

Don't have any accessories like MTR's or the lift (yet  , 2" lift is coming in the next couple of weeks) but I do carry about 150-200kg's of camera gear in city traffic most days.

Just thought it might help when working out petrol v's diesel milage
    Cheers, Leon

Ive got the 3.4L and it gets about 15-17L/100 mostly highway driving but if i had my time again i would go the 3.0L TD cause it has got nearly as much power as the V6 with better fuel economy

I have 3.4 LPG injected and it's brilliant on fuel and hasn't lost any power. Recommend it highly

My V6 gets around the mid 11's / 100km, and that is fully loaded, sitting on the speed limit, with 2 inch lift and running larger MT tyres, Bullbar and winch, and it is an automatic. The 3.4 does not like being made to run on LPG, and will start to have head issues as time goes on.
The Diesel DOES NOT HAVE ANYWHERE NEAR AS MUCH POWER AS THE V6, and when you load them up they are very slow and drink as much as the Petrol ones, due to the fact that you dont have to make the petrol ones work as hard.

Yep crooza I have had both the 90 in petrol, then on LPG sold that and got the 1kz diesel, both grande's and both auto, diesel will not out run the petrol either in speed or pulling power (Ive towed behind both). The diesel will use MORE fuel then the petrol if you like to push the diesel over 110/120 so if your in the NT and want to sit on 130 in the diesel you will see the fuel jump to 15L per 100, the best I got from my V6 was 12.2L per 100 fully loaded and sitting on the speed limits (110 max) The diesel you will crack under 10's IF you dont go over 95k, hit 100 and it will use around the 11, hit 110/120 you will see 14's and pulling up say Hawksbury, Mooney Mooney, flat to the board in the diesel would see down to 90 then the O/D would cut out back to 3rd to pull the last bit of the hill remebering this is flat to the boards, the petrol would kill it up hills, would still cut out of O/D but would maintain 110 all the way. Also remembering the diesel MUST have oil and filter every 5k, you get the petrol cheaper at the bowser when the price comes down where diesel sits pretty much the same. Unless I had more $$ for a D4D (which Im still not sure about with injector issues and at roughly $800 a pop) at the moment am extremely happy with the 120 4L petrol, goes like a rat up a drain pipe if need be, will blow half these dooff dooff machines into the weeds and still give me 15/16's round town and last to trips away have been 11.8L per 100 and 11.6 trip prior loaded but with no lift, standard grantreck tyres running 40 PSI and runs the factory bullbar as per pic, both the 90's had ARB steel bars, BFG A/T's on both, cargo barrier, fridge, OME lift, etc, The 90's are a great 4wd, a lift and a locker or 2 will get you most places you will ever need to go. I really do love the 120 but lacks the ground clearance the 90's have even standard. Personally think the 90's are a bit tougher but the 120 is more comfortable then both my previous 90's. For 30k you will pick up a series 2 90 series grande with all the gear, traction control, etc or 30K will get you roughly a 05 GXL with reasonable klms in either 4L or T/D 1kz, I dont think 30k will get you into a 120 D4D unless it had extremely high klms. Either go the 90 and will leave you with a heap of coin to do any mod you want (remebring cant do body lift if it has factory airbag/s) its ilegal, or go the 120 but obviously depending on finances as to wether you have the extra to outlay for lift, lockers etc. You may even get an 03/04 grande with all the fruit. I pushed the limit getting the 120, with out borrowing so saving for the rest, including saving for a trip to Fiji in August for a wedding (not mine, been there done that) reno's along with allthe usual bills any of us with a house have to outlay, so depends on how quick you want to do the mods and the $$ available. The 2.7's are a great motor and will see 400/500k without dramas if well serviced BUT put the on LPG and it kills them. I converted the 3.4 V6 to LPG, hated it and would never do it again but this is just my opinion and for the hassles I had with it, plenty of people run it in the 90 V6 with out issues but not for me........Cheers Steve

                      Gday Steve M

Quote: pulling up say Hawksbury, Mooney Mooney, flat to the board in the diesel would see down to 90

Answer: I have the 1KD (Not 1KZ) and when i approach moony moony at 117-120km (Nervously) in 6th gear, after i have past the mid way where the police like to hang out on the left i then (still in 6th gear doing 117-120kmh) floor it and "i am" doing 160kmh by the time i reach the crest of the hill!..... This is a true 160kmh as i run 265/70/17 instead of 265/65/17 which makes my speedo run approx 6% slower. (I always use Moony moony as the bench mark for torque!).

I also only change my engine oil and filter every 10k!

I did a trip to Melbourne from Umina beach last week (Left sun 11.30pm - Arrived in Melbourne CBD Mon 8.30am) (Obviously i was heavy footed) and used a total of 168ltr of diesel and covered 1,886km on the round trip. (Including the speedo run-out for the calculations).

                      All-up i used 168Ltr of diesel @ (1.42.9Ltr) & 30Ltr of LPG @ (0.50.7Ltr). (With the 8c woolies docket of course!) I have no-probs with using caltex fuel

That breaks down to me using an average of 8.9Ltr per hundred of diesel and 1.59Ltr of LPG per hundred. (I'm sure these figures would improve big time if drove with eyes on a scan gauge but i just drive the car!)..... I average 10kmh on-top of normal speed limit.

That means it was costing me on average $13.41 per hundred kilometers with the LPG.

There was only two people in the car plus luggage going there but the same with an extra 80kg cargo coming back!

A 1KD-D4D together with running LPG "is" very quick and good on fuel when under load compared to the 4Ltr V6 under the same conditions.

I believe that if i was on a set budget and had to choose between the 1KZ or the 4Ltr V6 Then i would also probably choose the V6 but not the V6 over the D4D if i my budget would allow it!

I also reckon that your write-up on the comparisons for your value for money and budget to be considered was very in depth and detailed with all areas considered and excellent as well as spot-on!

                      Cheers

""I also only change my engine oil and filter every 10k!"" you will get away with that with the D4D due to the different injection system but the 1kz with the old style pump even though it still runs cleaner then my old 2.8D did the 1kz still needs to be done every 5k to keep it nice and clean. Fuuny I use Hawskbury for my testing ground lol as well as the first hil when you come off Pennant Hills rd and hit the F3 and you have that long first climb. The 4L V6 will never get the economy the D4D does in a million years but I loooove being able to nail it off the mark if need be and blow the doof doof macines into the weeds on the P plates........Cheers Steve

Just converted my 3.4 to LPG & it's all good so far. It's the older mixer system & all I can say is that it's vastly improved on older systems I've had. If there's a drop in power, I can't pick it & even with gas at 73.9 cpl it's still halved my running costs. This is my 9th LPG vehicle & I think I'll always lean this way. The 2.7 being unsuitable for gas comes as a surprise to me as I had it's fore-runner - the 1RZ 2.4 - in my LPG Hiace & it did 300 000km before slightly cracking the head. Welded up & good until 428 000km when the poor ol thing just plain wore out. 2nd motor was still going at 699 000km when sold.

Sounds like you did some courier work there Esses ?? 700 thou bloody hell lol, Bet the old hiace went through some rear diffs ?? Was common on them, they didnt like it when the old vans were loaded with a tonne of crap lol, and yeah the 2.7 for some reasons dont like LPG, think its more of a head issue then bottom end of motor........Cheers Steve

Yeah, 28 years worth! Would you believe that my ol Hiace was still running the original, diff., gearbox, springs, rear shocks (weren't doing much), radiator & exhaust? From memory it was on it's 4th clutch & I'd got so's I could change brake pads in about 20 mins tops & plugs in 15 mins. It was a '91 model & would go close to being the best vehicle I've ever had. Certainly the most reliable.
