  • What DON'T you like about your Prado?

I wonder if other PradoPointers have any pet annoyances about their Prados?

For me there are a couple of little ones and one big one.

I don't like the name "Prado". I think Toyota were very narrow-minded when they basically copied Mitsubishi on this one. The name reminds me of a brand of women's clothing then that gets me on to my next pet annoyance.

This is going to make me sound sexist, and I certainly don't want to offend, but it annoys me how many women drive Prados around town. I reckon there should be a tax on four wheel drives driven my anyone without a heavy vehicle licence. (That oughta stir things up a little). Ford Territorys (or should that be Territories) I can understand, but why such a capable vehicle gets wasted I can't quite understand. I guess some wives drive the family Prado cause the bloke of the house had a company car and this is understandable.

The main gripe I have about my 120 is the flaming cruise control. It is easily the most annoying cruise control I've ever used. It's just plain too agressive, as soon as the vehicle comes to a slight hill and the speed drops 1.000001km/h from the set point - it's get all vroom and carries on a treat blowing dinosaur bones out the rear and over-compensating. I guess I'm used to manual cars and vehicles with very different power to weight ratios, but as it turns out I use the 120's cruise control less than 2% of the time I used to use my Subaru's. This is not helped by the fact that I live in a mountainous area.

Oh and no low range with the centre diff unlocked is a bit of a dissapointment, but no big deal.

So what gets up your nose about your "Prado"?

Did someone mention "What about the rear diff?" It's not such an issue for me, it was manageable.

    Drew.

Hey Drew I'm totally with you on the cruise control annoyance factor.!! I find myself driving to compensate for what it should do it self. They had the same issue in the 90series, I would've thought it could have been fixed on the new model.! There's no reason for it with the available torque output. I also have a Honda Legend and now thats how cruise control should work..Take a note Toyota.!!!
Oh and the low range with the centre diff unlocked isn't an issue for me, mine works with or without. 8)

How is it you cannot have Low range with centre diff unlocked? On mine, in the manual it is the one on page 146. 4WD System (a) (lever/button type). It said when sift into low range the centre diff is unlocked. You have to push a button to have it locked. Is this Grande only or something....or is it a miss print?
      Thanks

Agree totally about the cruise control gripes ... when I drove my father-in-law's '07 Prado down the south coast of NSW earlier this year, I found the cruise control to be extremely annoying ... set at 100kph, hit a slight hill, it jumps down a gear and takes off, quite violently at times ... it's not very smooth at all.

Yeah it must be only on the Grande.!
I know the 80series and possibly the 100series lock in the centre diff when low range is selected.
It should be able to be used unlocked in all of them I reckon, certainly a lot less undue stress on the gearbox and sure makes it easier to move a trailer/caravan/boat around while still on a hard surface.!

            siukalo,

Your signature doesn't indicate what vehicle you drive so I'm having problems relating to your example.

My vehicle is the same as the 120 series GXL, it uses a transfer lever and the options available are "H, HL and LL". It's been covered a bit elsewhere here.

I'm so glad it's not just me. :-) Somtimes it really shits me off. Oh well, I've learnt now that it's a flat-lander thing, forget using it in the hills.

The first cruise control annoyance I fixed with Unichip... ie no longer switching down gear on slight decline...

However the most annoying bit of cruise control for me is that it is
switches off/resets it's setting once you stop or go below 40km an hour...
(At least this is a case on 2004 model). So if you set it to 80km an hour,
stop at traffic light and you have to set it up again, instead of just resuming previous speed...

We needed to upgrade my wife's 10 year old Rav4. After a trip to Fraser Island with a rental 80 series, I wanted a "proper" 4WD. The wife wanted a "fashion statement". The end result was the Prado. It is her car but it is my toy.

I don't mind the shortcomings. If the car was perfect, then I wouldn't being having all this fun modifying it.

Each new accessory comes with a carefully worded justification that has been formulated from hours of research on Pradopoint.com. The snorkel was to protect the engine from serious damage that could happen from little more than a puddle. The dual battery system and subsequent 1000W inverter was to make our camping trips that much more comfortable. The UHF radio is a safety requirement that could save our lives in the event of an emergency (I haven't mentioned the limited range - I am sure she thinks we can call overseas on it!). Safety has also been used as grounds for fitting the reverse cameras, the cargo barrier, and the recovery points. The roof racks essential for our camping trips (she was however expecting the sleek sports racks and not the heavy duty bars - comment was made that it is starting to look a bit tradesman and that was before she noticed the shovel holders!).

I just need to work on the "essential" suspension and tyre upgrade.

                  Cheers!

                    Drew

Mine is a 2007 D4D Grande. My level option is L N H. with a centre diff lock button located near the front power socket. On mine there is no HL and LL. Does this make sense?
                    Thanks

Drove a mates 120 and I thought it was broken when it would not resume after stopping. Now I know why.

Might get a manual if the cruise is so bad on the Auto's

                        Pet annoyances for me are:

The cruise control - same issues as everyone else. I don't use it as much as I do in other cars I drive. When I do I tend to flick it off at the bottom of a rise and back on when at the top. Kind of defeats the purpose but at least I can stay in the gear I want.

The lack of drivers seat adjustment on the GXL. Pretty poor compared with other cars of a similar (or far less) price. The seat is comfortable enough but it would be nice to have a bit of adjustment on a long run.

The lack of traction control etc on the GXL even as an option. Again poor compared with the competition.

The rear door stay. A gas strut would be better

After owning a Jeep with about 25 visists to the dealer over two years, everything in the prado is just Great including the cruise, when i hit a bit of a slope i tend to flick the auto from 5 to 4 and it stops the big kick down as it holds the fourth gear well.

Too new to experience any real issues, time will tell.

What don't you like about your Prado

Well I'm going to chip in with my two cents worth and I absolutely love the Cruise and use it all the time but mine is the 6 speed manual

The only issues that I have with cruise is the location of it (I keep hitting the indicator lever in error) and you are right that it does shut down when slowing down to much lower speeds but there is no harshness when going uphill, just smooooth sailing so to speak.

Actually Drew, my son who lives in Coffs commented to me that he can always tell a Prado is approaching becauase its always got the fog lights burning and being driven by a woman!!
