Hi I"ve been told that if I have abs I cant get a tray to fit, is this right or what is the reasoning behind this. Is it just the canister?. Would much prefer to put under the bonnet if I can.
Thanks SteveSteve

Probably a silly question... But how do you know if you have a model with ABS or not? I'm fairly sure we don't have ABS but just want to double-check.
I plan on going for dual batteries in a couple of weeks but have some questions;
Is there a specific spec for an 8" battery that I should look for? Or even a particular brand/model?
How do people suggest I get the power from the engine bay to the rear/boot of the vehicle?
I plan on going for a RedArc SBI12 off Ebay, is that good enough for 80% of things? I might change yet, depends what the local guy can offer.
Any tips/suggestions for when I do it?
Thanks in advance!Toyota Prado GXL Kimberly - 95 Series - 3.4L V6

No way to fit a second battery under bonnet unless you do major moves.
Re putting battery in rear. Put the isolated next to the main battery, run power cable thru the grommet on that side and under the edging of carpet to rear. Very easy.Michael and Kelly

Thanks in advance!
My previous 96 RV Prado 2.7 litre I owned a few years back being a pov pack I installed a dual battery in that. I bought I think it was a commodore battery tray and relocated the starter battery to the drivers side. It was tight and took some fiddling around but it did fit and cleared the bonnet when closed. I had to extend my main loom around there but in the end worked a treat. Unfortunately I never bothered to take pics of it.Steve

major moves? i moved the charcoal canister closer to the motor and that allowed me to fit a large N70 4wd batt infront of the wiper motor ... fits nice and snug

Hey guys, just bought another Prado and putting a dual battery in it. I have a Piranha tray, I have relocated the carbon canister but the tray fowls on the metal pipes that were under the carbon canister. Anyone else had this problem or can suggest what I need to do?Hers: 2009 Hilux TD with lots of goodies........

Gday mate if its the one I'm thinking of I took the metal line underneath off and replaced it with rubber hose. Worked ok. I was lucky my tray had a bracket on the side that the canister attached to so although still had to mod the hoses and wiring didn't have to move it far. I too relocated my starter battery into the aux tray. Was a perfect fit on mine which allowed me to fit a 120A/H deep cycle into original battery position and could have gone even bigger if I had chosen to.
Some pics if anyones interested
Steve

Thanks Steve, I cut the pipes and replaced with rubber hose, I also wrapped some garden hose around the AC pipes just in case they rub on the tray.
I have bought a Yellow Top D34/78 for my second battery instead of swapping the battery positions and now looking at a dual battery isolator. I am looking at the Redarc SBI12,, nice and simple and have seen these on eBay for $40?? Anyone know what the go is with these?? Are they just cheap knock offs? I am going to run my 60lt Waeco off this so would also like to put a solar panel on the roof, will the solar panel connect straight to the SBI12 or do I need a separate regulator?Hers: 2009 Hilux TD with lots of goodies........

Well a touch over 8 years since I started the thread I finally got around to doing my install.
And this is where I have put the charcoal canister as there wasn't really any room left in the engine bay.
Its under the headlight if you cant make it out, it looks a bit squishy however there is a fair bit of room there and was by far easier to work there than in the engine bay. I haven't categorically got an its OK to mount it there (lower) but have chatted to a few people who have said it shouldn't be an issue which from what I have found seems to be the case.
A few bits of info/things to consider,
1) I had purchased the piranha battery tray a few years back so used that, I had wondered why they had it so far out from the side but now believe this is so it can sit lower, I don't know that my century starting battery would fit there (height wise) if it didn't so worth taking into consideration if you are making your own.
2)It took me longer than expected to do, none of it overly difficult but quite fiddly and time consuming.
3) I just used a large battery tray for my AGM from Supercheap Auto but this is a bit in the thin side for what I think would be ideal.
4) I went with a traxide controller, I think well worth looking at if you are looking to purchase a dual battery controller.2000 GXL 2inch Lift, LPG, Yota Bullbar & Towbar, Snorkel, Alloy Wheels, Uniden UHF, IPF Spotties
