  • HID upgrades for IPF lights

ARB Northern in Artarmon (Sydney) is offering 50watt HID upgrades for IPF900XS lights at $550 a pair fitted. This is in addition to $399 a pair for the halogen lights themselves.

The IPF factory HID's are actually 35watts, so these 50watt inserts promise to be even better (at around $500 a pop), rather than the $780ish each that the factory HID IPF's are selling for.

    Whoa! That's some cabbage.

I think I'll give fleabay a shot when I fit my Hellas, most likely have change from $200 that way.

Just about to order these babies from a bloke in Melb. 55w HID Upgrade kit which fit neatly inside my old IPF900s driving lights. I currently have 2 x pencil beams but purchased today from ARB 1 x spread beam lense/reflector assembly to light up the sides of the tracks also. Can't wait to Arc em up...

I went the fleabay route as well, a set of spot and drive works wonders, there is a company in Melb who deal with kits all the time and so far they have worked extremely well, good support as well. The alternative is Jaycar they have them for "showroom & offroad purposes only" prices similar to that off fleabay.

The only downside to Hid spots is when going back to low beam its like using a couple of candles and headlights, I upgraded the headlights to 60/55 Narva blue 50% and noticed a differnce in spread and brightness from them only down side was I blew 2 globves within 6 weeks, so not sure whats going on there - another project to sort out !

I'll post some pics tonight when I get home. A co-worker who is on the Patrol4x4 forum recommended this guy. Matt is a Vendor on Patrol4x4 Forum and is very good to deal with. Quality product and very competitive. Link to his threads on Patrol4x4 is here ThumpaInc on Patrol4x4 or you can intoduce yourself by emailing [email protected] direct. (the internally Ballasted HID Liteforce XGT's complete kits for $750 that he does were very tempting...)

                    Thanks Craig.
Reckon I will contact him once the exhaust, chip and other projects are done. May as well do the headlights and IPF extremes all in one go. For the record, I am lead to believe that because the Grande has self levelling suspension the HID headlights are legal!!!!! Hope this is correct.....

Here is my HID Conversion kit installed into IPF900s Driving lights. Originally I had 2 Pencil Beam lenses. I decided to convert 1 to a Spread beam. This is an easy, 15 minute job (if that).
This is the Kit as mentioned in previous post
                        .
2 screws and it's all apart. From here I removed the existing wiring

The kit came complete with Cable ties, mounting brackets & screws, nuts "n" bolts. Originally I was going to just sikaflex the ballasts in but I decided to utilize the brackets and drill a 5/16 hole to bolt the ballast in place but still utilizing the sikaflex just to allow for any severe vibration.

Ballast Bolted in and Sikaflexed. wait until the this sets before reassembling

plugging in of all cables are dead easy. Nothing really to go wrong. I used the original leads for now from the wiring loom with the bullet connectors outside of the lights and spade connectors inside but I will shorten/replace later as I didnt have any decent connectors. I also want to install some convuluted tubing inside to protect from any heat/rubbing. I will also need to weather proof the bolt hole with some silicone just to be sure.
Continued next Post (4 image limit)

                          Part 2 Contd...
Whilst Sikaflex is setting, install globe into Lens assembly (and have a clensing ale)

Reassemble, arch em up and realign. All done! The lights do take approx 15 - 20 seconds to warm up but lights reignite instantaneously after initial startup.
Forgot to take some before shots (Doh) but everyone knows what 100W spotties look like but I will head out and take some Shots post HID Install and update this later.

                          <Edit> High Beam - No HID's/With HID's

Great result Craig. How did you change the pencil to spread? I actually want to do the opposite.

Mine are the older style 900s lights. ARB have the lens/reflector assemblies for these in either Pencil or spread. the Spread was item LR900DC @ $51.00 ExGST. But I think you have the extremes so the price may/may not be a little different. It was simply a case of remover to self tappers from the housing, uncliping the lamp and spade connectors and then there are 5 spring type clips holding the assembly into the housing. Once you take the housing off it's pretty self explanatory.
