  • Dust Entry

I have an 04/07 GXL with a dealer fitted towbar and trailer plug. Entry of dust around the jack area has been pretty crook.
Mr Toyota had a look and has ordered the new "field kit" which is a new trailer power outlet cable, conduit and redesigned grommets to overcome "dust entry".
Due to be fitted later in the week.
Anyone else with dust entry problems??.

i've got some in there but not too excessive...

would be interested to find out where it's coming in from because i'd like to run a wire through there!

      Hi all
On a previous post I put up about dust entry, mine also
had terrible dust in around the jack area. I found under the rear
bar part of the rear under body has holes in it which lead into a channel
which leads into the jack area. I found this by putting a flood light under the car to see where light was coming in which lead me to this area. I since put tape over the holes to see what effect it had on reducing the dust.
It reduced it substantially but a bit still gets in but nowhere as bad.
Every other prado I have looked at is the same. At first I thought they
may have left blanking plugs off but thats the way they are. I would be very interested to hear if that fix works as mine goes out of warranty in july.

        dust entry

The new cable loom was fitted today. It varies from the prevoius by having a boot/seal where the cable exits the floor pan before connection to the cable loom.

The WarrantyManager said if dust continues to enter the car then it would need to be sent to Toyota panel shop for further inspection.

At least there is an acknowledgment of a problem.

Thanks for the advise on the holes under the bar , Ill have a look.

                Hi all
I'am sorry I have'nt got the photo;s camera is playing up.
I will try and explain in more detail as at the the moment i'am putting
the new trailer harness in . Were the rear fuel tank supports attach
to the body that section has holes in it . That section runs from one side
of car to the other which leads in to the jack area. Last year when i was
having the dust problem on my trip i stuck a fluro light in the jack area
to see if any light was appearing from under the car sure enough that
whole section was lit up . About the field fix from toyota I 've just removed
my old trailer harness which only had 1 grommett where the new one has
2 one where it passes into the body work from underneath and the 2nd
one is where the harness passes thru the floor pan behind the side trim.
I don'nt know whether it will completely fix problem as there is still the area under the jack where it can still come up. I Will try and get photo,s
                si

                  Rear Dust Entry.

                  All,

I think you'll find that if you have a wiring harness fitted for a towbar that the plastic gromment in this part of the vehicle is pushed out or has a big hole in it.

The grommet is about 30 to 40mm diameter and yes goes into the cross rail that runs between the two chassis side rails.

I've just been playing with mine today trying to get another cable into there for the anderson plug to double the effective size of cable.

Having some problems cause rear drawers are fitted and can't get some of the trim off around the bottom left of the door opening as I did last time.

I amagine though that if the grommet is out or has a large hole you would get heaps of dust in not to mention water if you decided to go for a bit of a dip.

                  Cheers
                  Garth

The other day, when looking in the jack recess area I also notice day light coming from down very low under the jack. Upon investigation discovered that there is a rubber vent flap which I would suggest is to allow through flow air ventilation & stop pressure build up in cabin.

No dust in mine but may be something keeping flap open or flap may even be missing in your vehicle????

I should have mentioned the flap is part of a plastic duct assembly mounted from jack storage area & mudgaurd & vented to the rear of the vehicle.
Not sure how it is secured, feels like it clips on. (Maybe it is missing?) If it was you would surely get a lot of dust entering rear quarter area.

We've just returned from an 8000km outback trip, 6000km on dirt roads and Simpson Desert. The dust problem was HUGE and quite unacceptable for a vehicle that is touted by the manufacturer as an off-road tourer.

We had a factory towbar with the new 2-grommet wiring harness fitted. The dealer hadn't fitted either grommet into the holes where they're supposed to go, but we found that out and corrected it before we departed. However we had volumes of dust inside each rear lower quarter panel, plus it's inside the dome light, the map reading lights, the sunnies compartment, the 6-stacker and the instrument cluster. It's also embedded in all three 3rd row seatbelts where they were retracted around the reels for the duration of the trip and I suspect there's a thick layer in the roof lining.

After reading this discussion I realise I was stupid - I cleaned it all up, except for the roof lining, I haven't got into there yet. I should have taken it as it was to the dealer and bitched like hell.

Toyota really need to address this problem. My Kia Sorento did dirt road duty and never leaked dust like this new Prado.

Mechanically, though, it's brilliant. The Simpson was a cake-walk. 3 litre D4D auto GXL.

                          Hi
jUST GOT BACK MYSELF FROM MY CENTRAL AUS TRIP - AND YES HUGE DUST PROBLEMS. WAS VERY ANNOYED BECAUSE IT "DAMPENED" A GREAT TRIP......
REPORTED IT TO TOYOTA ALICE SPRINGS - JUST TO MAKE SURE THEY WERE AWARE OF IT..... GOT THEM TO DO A QUICK INSPECT AND WRITE ME A LETTER FOR BALLARAT TOYOTA (COVERING MY BUM SO TO SPEAK)

GOT HOME AND DROPPED IT IN FOR WARRANTY REPAIR AND MUST SAY BALLARAT TOYOTA HAS LOOKED AFTER ME WELL.
TURNED OUT THAT APART FROM A GROMMET PROBLEM RE TOWBAR INSTALL THE MAJOR FAULT WAS THE COMPLETE MISSING SECTION OF THE FLAPS IN THE "RECYCLE AIR" CONTROLLER BOX - MANUFACTURING FAULT FROM THE START.

TOYOTA FULLY DETAILED THE CAR INSIDE AND OUT, REPLACED THE VENTING BOX, PUT IN THE INSIDE AIR CON FILTER (SHE DIDNT HAVE ONE ??) SENT THE CD PLAYER OF FOR REPAIR AND HAVE BEEN GOOD ABOUT IT.

JUST HOPE THATS THE END OF MY DUST PROBLEMS.

                            Stephen,
when you say"Recycle air controller box" do you mean the through flow or pressure release vent under the jack storage area??

I take it you had a great time in Central Australia.

Dont know were they pulled it out from - about the size of a shoe box with 2 rows of four little vents. Mine was missing the bottom set of vents hence a mighty amount of bull dust got in.....

Trip was great - best highlight "boggy hole" in the finke national park 2 days of great 4wd, fantastic scenery and we only saw one other 4by doing it...... every were else we always had heaps of company.
