Has anyone got any information on the relative merits, or otherwise, of the various power chips, such as Dtronic and DPChip, for the 1KZ-TE engine?

Thanks for the link John, very informative. I have gone back and looked at both the Dtronic and DPChip web sites and they both appear to be very similar (down to the same text is some cases), both claiming to provide timing and fuel control. Is one of these products any better than the other? I would appreciate some feedback from other forum users that have either of these products installed.

        P Chip

I have just got back from having a Steinbauer P Chip fitted to my 2005 TD GLX manual. the intial impression is how smooth the motor has become. It revs easily and is so quiet I can hear the tyres now. It allows the vehicle to be driven at slower speeds in a higher gear. The throttle is very responsive. When you lift off slightly it has an immediate effect as opposed to standard where it is a very relaxed response. It is not a V8, but it does respond more strongly where otherwise you might have wait a little longer for things to happen. But the most noticable effect is that the car is smoother and quieter.

I've had an ENG_ETK performance modulefitted, along with an decent exhaust system for quite a while (probably one of the first with performance module and exhaust in Australia).

          What I can tell you is that;
          a. no measurable change in economy over a full tank
          b. more power at every point in the rev range
          c. HEAPS more power after 2800RPM
          d. max boost is now moved down to about 1500RPM
          e. can maintain speed limit up Adelaide hills in top gear with oversize tyres, and some to spare
          f. much safer overtaking (can get past a lot quicker)
          g. heap more fun to drive - not a truck any more

This would be one of the first changes I'd be making on a future vehicle

I am having the Steinbauer chip fitted to my 2003 TD auto on 20 July.

Happy to give my impressions here when I have it done.

As far as getting a chip fitted. Is it plug and play, DIY or specialist shop only?
Never had it done to any car Ive had, Nor have any friends had one fitted.

Just interested, They are advertised on ebay etc but would you need someone to fit it?

              Jeff.

                G'day Jeff,

The DTronic from ARB is a plug and play affair that is fairly simple to fit.

The Steinbauer requires some wiring to the battery and the potentionometer (if that is how you spell it) so I have opted to have it fitted by the professionals. The mob who are fitting it also stated that it would have to be wound back a little bit to stop overheating. He only stated this after enquiring whether it was the D4D or the old diesel so I assume this would not be the case with the D4D (the winding back bit).

I am not sure of fitting requirements/difficulty for the other chips.

                  As a rule the following is typical;

                  a. Common rail injections systems are plugin to the existing wiring loom
                  b. VE / VP type systems are wire into the injection system
                  c. Dastek units are typically with connectors - at a price

type C units with connectors may not be possible to move to other vehicle with simlar engine due to different ECU pin configuration.

The one I have is wire in for 1KZ-TE engines (only). Same manufacturer has connectors for D4D (common rail) engines.

Wire in on the 1KZ-TE is about an 45min from openning the glovebox, fitting the unit, and closing the glovebox. The ECU is behind the glovebox for those who dont know.

D4D engines are about 15min - some of that time is removing plastic covers for access, and making a nice loomed job.

Ok. Just got back from picking up the chariot after having the Steinbauer chip fitted. I have not yet had the mandrel bend exhaust fitted (another $1600.00 odd dollars) so Taipan on the Gold Coast would only set the chip at 70 percent to avoid overheating. 70 percent is the lowest chip setting which only gives me about an extra 7 or so kw and 40 newtons at the wheels - so there is room for a big improvement when the new exhaust is fitted.

First impressions even at the 70 percent setting:

As mentioned by 05oiler, the vehicle is very noticeably quieter and runs a great deal smoother.

Power increase, even at the 70 percent setting is noticeable.

Throttle response appears to be more consistent across the revs.

Once I have tested it a bit more I will post again to let you know if I think the chip was worth the $1305.00 purchase price and $175.00 fitting charge.

Hey indy are you going to get a larger dump pipe? I've also heard, that the air intakes are very restrictive if you have a snorkle (I'm assuming that yours a 90 because it's a 03'....I might be wrong), have you thought about changing that, and I hear that K&N airfilters make a difference too.

                        Andy
                        I had mental issues when I owned a Discovery.......But it's sorted now!

                          G'day Andy,

Mine is the first of the 120 series - mid 2003.

When finances allow I will be fitting a new exhaust system and also a K&N filter. I do have a snorkle but am not sure how I would go about changing the air intakes?

i have the new D4d prado Vx and had a Steinbauer fitted and also the taipan exhaust fitted.

                            This is what i found.

Steinbauer chip on its own makes the engine smoother but you cant wind the settings up due to the excessive heat build up at the dump pipe.

with the taipan exhaust fitted i have wound it up to 80% which i find the best setting i have also tried 90-100% but found the engine to be quite harsh and gear changes rough.

It took me 30min to fit the Steinbauer and found it very simple.

i have around 150kw at the fly wheel.
2007 150kw Prado VX D4D, 5spd auto with steinbauer p-box, taipan exhaust, rear dust guard, bonnet protector, factory removable towbar, underneath mounted spare wheel, polished soveriegn Bullbar, Bridgestone D694's, Sandgrabba mats and Panasonic DVD /TV stereo sound system.

                              Hi waifamily.
I got know idea what a Steinbauer chip looks like any chance for a pic or two.I notice you have an o7 prado so how do you go with warranty if somthing goes wrong and you have that chip fitted.I suppose you can remove the chip but can the dealership detect that you have had a chip in place by the results that may come up on there workshop computers

                              regards Rob
