  • Projector Headlamp (GX470 type)

I found that the Lexus GX470 headlamp looks for aggressive than the that of normal Toyota Prado Series 120 (Type H4). Are these two headlamps interchangeable? Otherwise is there anyone know where can I buy those headlamp for my prado?

Kinda looks like the Grille area may be different so may not retro-fit.

I would think there may be some difference with the plugs etc, and possibly side guards?
If it was all good, they would be a bolt in replacement But thats in a dream world usually

Lexus spares would be able to source them for you, but make sure you take something soft to fall on, I would think they will be $$$$.

Your best bet is to wander off and find one to have a good sticky beak over, then compare to a prado for ease of install.

    Good luck.

I have changed mine to a projector type with angel eyes. Have not got around to it to take pics at night. Post one when I get a chance. As for the GX one, they don't fit I have investigated. Also even though you can make it fit by either replacing the front side guard or modifying it, you will have alot of trouble with the light shield due to left hand drive.
        Thanks

Now that is an upgrade worth doing in my books. Having just had to drive in the outback using just the Prados useless headlights I would do this for sure.

okok matt relax i cough it up.........u pushy animals.......lol but I don't think you wanna do it after you read this.....

I bought them in Japan through an agent. They cost me 27000Yen plus postage. Now that means around $270USD plus shipping. Shipping was a killer, because it had to be shipped via EMS from Japan. I don't remember the exact cost, but think it was around the same price as the headlamp.

It looks good doesn't it? Now for the bits you don't wanna know.....

The headlamp for originally for H7 low beam and H1 high beam. It has adjustable beam angle on both up down and side ways. What you see in mine now is not H7 it is D2S in it.

Now here comes the trouble. The reflector and the light shield behind the projector is not designed very good as it is a after market part. The cut off on the beam is not a Z pattern but instead it looks more like u shaped. So I modified the light shield to get it sorta ok on the driver's side, but the passenger side is still abit wonky.

The beam pattern is not very wide by default is well, had to move the D2S back by about 4mm to get a wider spread of beam.

I am stilll mucking around with it to get it right. As of now it is definatly brighter than any of the H4 HID kit or factory headlight....

Mav: You don't wanna use projector at the outback, because of the light shield. There is a clear cut off at the end of the beam pattern unlike reflector design. What this means is that on the normal headlamp you see the light gradually fade as distance increases. On projector, it is all bright until the cut off and after the cut off you see exactly jack all after the cut off. That's why LC200 still uses reflector design.

                  ( Reflector Design )
Roo coming at ya......From the windscreen you see the roo lights up as you approch closer......So you sorta see a very faint image of a roo from a very far distance then brightens up as you get closer..

                  ( Projector Design )
Roo coming at ya......From the windscreen you see absolutly nothing beyond the cut off......See nothing and nothing until the roo is inside the cut off. Now all of a sudden you see a very bright roo very close to you. In fact it is so close to you, you probably can't do anythin......Sorta like seeing a ghost all of a sudden...

If you are prepared to do lots of muck around then the result is good I think. If you want plug n play then forget it. Not worth while.

Sorry for bad english.....see if you can understand what I mean.
                  Thanks

I see, well in that case it is not for me then. Thanks for the explanation, cheers.

Good on Ya siukalo, very impressive setup, and I did understand your description of the beam cutoffs so I wont be using them up here in the far north too many roos and cattle on the back roads.

yeah, you're right, the projector design is great as long as what you want to see is in the beam... i had a vectra before the prado and that was probably the worst thing about it, out on the open road there was no "spray" which meant you missed things like the reflectors that indicate which way the road is going ahead!

                        bloody good up close though!

                        still want them though!

Last time I mucked around with those after market headlights, I could never get the beam pattern to be right, so I gave up on that set of headlights.

I found a set of second hand headlight and decided to give it another go. I cracked the headlight open and installed the projector inside it. The projector has an angel eye and it is a bi-xenon type using standard D2S bulb.

The beam pattern now is as good as you can get it to be I think. It is loads better than the previous projector headlight. It was a lot of work but I think the result is well worth it for me. Here is the pics.

IF anyone is interested, source out the Toyota OEM HID headlight ass'y from UK / EU model Prados. They come with D2S HID bulbs standard and also have bumper headlamp washers available if you want.
