  • Hand brake adjustment

I've noticed my hand brake travel is now very large after 1000km. Other new cars I've owned had a small change in hand brake travel but none as noticeable as this.

It's not a show stopper, I'm just curious what other owners have experienced.

First service is next week, I'm sure they'll fix it then.

    Cheers all,

    Drew.

      G'day Nige,

They fixed it up at the 1000km service, but I've now done 10,000km and it fairly loose again.

I'm about to do the 10,000km service myself this weekend and that's one of the things on my list.

I suspect it's the result of the initial cable stretch combined with the fact that the handbrake operates separate drums in the hubs.

How many km have you done?

      Cheers,

      Drew.

        700

It seems to only apply pressure in the last 10 degrees of movement. Wil get them to adjust at 1st service.

Same same, they actually told me at the 1000 that they had done mine as they stretch.

            Handbrake travel

I have also had the problem of excessive handbrake travel, after having only 800Km on the odometer the handbrake was actually at the end of its travel and the brake wasn't fully applied!
I have a very steep driveway and I was lucky that my wife and I are both in the habit of leaving it in 1st gear as well as using the handbrake.
I remembered a trick from the past and I was able to make an adjustment myself by travelling in reverse and then applying the brakes. I did this several times in a row and I was able to change the travel back to where the handbrake was working again.
This is a trick from older drum brakes that would have a ratcheted adjuster in the drum that worked to take up slack from wear of the pads .
I now have 1300 km and no further problems. Try this and see if it works for you.

Same here. Mine wasn't much chop from new when i picked it up. Got them to adjust on first inspection service made it a bit better but not great.

mines 3 years old and done 50000 miles every time Toyota service it (10000 miles ) they tighten the handbrake and it seems to stretch in a 1000 miles or so. This is my first Toyota so I thought it was just one of those things. I've got discs on the back will the reversing trick still work?

Anyone else tried the reverse and hitting the brakes trick? I'm gonna try it as soon as I knock off work. Might grab the factory manual out and have a look.

Whilst on the subject, can anyone explain the logic behind the drum brakes for the hand brake? Why didn't they just use the disc like most other vehicles?

                  Cheers,

                  Drew.

Looking closer at the factory manual and I can't see how the reversing trick would adjust these brake shoes. There is an adjuster wheel in the back of the drum.

BTW, mine have been adjusted by two different Toyota dealers and the adjustment is out again.

I hope to get some time tonight to pull the covers off the centre console and see what is going on.

                      Cheers,

                      Drew.

There is an adjustment inside the rear drum as well as on the cable in the centre console. the adjustment should be done at the drum. becareful if you do it at the cable as it is not hard to break of the top of the adjuster nut.

Its in the drum as it holds a lot better than trying to squeeze the pads on to the disc.

Should I be charge when I request a adjustment on the handbrake.

I notice that the handbrake wasn't holding as good and at the 10,000km service , I request it be fixed ... I gone the bill and I was charged for the adjustment . Should it be covered under warranty ??

I'll second that, handbrake adjustment is also "wear and tear". :?

Should be part of the service to check and adjust it though. Have a look in the service book and see if its listed there.

A bit rude to charge extra to adjust it.

                              Same Here

Toyota Dubai Did mine at 21K

at that time 6 clicks , now after another 4K it is getting back , However A good starategy is to press the knob while lifting the handbrake and release and then lift to rthe final click . That will pro-long the "Stretch"on the cord  I Hope

I guess its another thing with LC-FJ-125 (AKA Prado 8) )
