I have had the same experience with mine since new, still happens at 106,000KM, they tighten it up at the 5000km services and loose again by the next time.

The Tojo handbrakes are always sus when compared with the Drum Brake on the Tailshaft Handbrake arragement of Nissan and many heavy machines, wire cables just keep on stretchinggggggg and you just keep on adjustinggggggggg :!: :!: :!:

Mine is also at the end of its travel.
Is it cable stretch or wear in the drum assembly ?
Im assuming cable stretch as I dont drive with the hand brake on and I would assume the pads dont drag.

I will have a look myself this weekend but is the adjustment in the drum just like adjusting the cable length or is it adjusting the pads for wear?

The old days with old drums the adjustment in the drum actually spread apart the pads. or have i got this wrong?
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

Aaahhh ... so it's not just me with the "long-travel" handbrake lever.

Just point me in the direction of the adjustor .... please.

              park brake

So have we found a fix for the crook park brake yet, my cook struggles with the park brake she has to leave it in gear as she cant pull hard enough on the brake. Toyota claim to have adjusted it at the 3 monthly/ 5000km service. yet it was no different. Not impressed with the park brake.

              Cheers

                  Re: park brake

                  Hi all,
FYI - i do my own adjustments as i think Toyota are simply pulling up on the adjusting cable at the centre console... quick and easy.
I take off the rear wheels, then make sure that the handbrake is off and remove the brake caliper and take the disc/drum off. Get the hose and give it a good hose down to remove all dust.
Check to make sure the pads are ok and that the adjusting mechanism is working so that both the pads are moving ok.
Then adjust the screw adjusting wheel, a little at a time, and keep refitting the drum on until the drum fits on just snugly over the pads. Remember which way to turn the adjusting wheel so when the drum is fitted, minor adjustment can be made through the service hole in the drum using a screw driver. Fit the drum on and now adjust through the service hole so that you can turn the drum and hear the pads touching the drum slightly as you spin it around. Refit the caliper and fit the wheel ..... NOW use the centre console adjustment nut and adjust the cable to achieve the std 6 -8 clicks...
                  cheers, Rod

I've got a 2008 d4d. How do I remove the centre console to access the handbrake lever cable adjuster?

                      Re: Hand brake adjustment

If you prise up the silver trims on either side of the console (starting at the back and lifting up) then remove both gear knobs and unzip the handbrake cover, you should then be able to lift the console up by opening the console bin and then gently lifting the back of the console and gradually work forward. It just clips in. You can then see down to the cable adjusting nut.
                      Cheers,

80,000 Km still operates on 6 clicks just fine never adjusted . Remember that the handbrake is just that not a substitute for the foot brake ,use only while stationary .

                            Re: Hand brake adjustment

mine sucks.. i used to think it was just because of the hand brakies i used to do (hey why do a 3 point turn on dirt when you can flick a 180  )

now with the STT's i gave that up.. i only get it adjusted when i start hitting the console when applying the hand brake.

                            once so far in 50k.

                              Hand Brake Adjustment

I know this topic has been on the board for some time but no one has specifically mentioned how you actually adjust the handbrake. If you can adjust the cable at the console, then how do you get at it? and secondly, if it is better to do it at the wheel, how do you do it, can anyone help?

You adjust/check at the drum first (shoe to drum clearance).

There is a small plug which gives access to the adjuster.
Both rear wheels need to be off the ground so you can rotate the wheels. Adjust untill the shoes come into contact with the drum and lock. Then then back off just enough so the drum rotates without any drag (if you have the wheels off then you need to fit the nuts to hold the disc/drum in the correct position).

Next you adjust/check at the hand brake lever.

You need to remove the top of the console at the lever (about 6 clips hold it down).

Adjust the cable so it takes 5-7 clicks to apply the hand brake fully, then check again that there is no drag on the rear drums.

                                Mick
