      Recovery Points

I have tried the Outback Ideas recovery points once as a trial using a bridle (equaliser) strap up hill and had no problem with the strap hitting the bumper.

          Thoughts?
Yes, looks like the Toyota improved the recovery points with 2005 Model,
so there is no more need for the outback ideas recovery hooks on those
          cars.

I've got the newer style of recovery points on mine - am getting the ARB deluxe bar fitted as soon as it arrives and I was just wondering whether the bar interferes or obstructs these factory recovery points.

I know the bar has its own recovery points but I understand they are only suitable for winching not snatching.

I'd just feel better knowing that the factory recovery points were still going to be intact and usable.

              Thanks Kel,

So I see the original Toyota points (which look like mine) are still there and you have the additional ones adjacent.

The photos are great and really helpful. You've saved me a sleepless night worrying about them... ops:

              Many thanks.

Fitted my own recovery points today - thanks to the great instructions on Pradopoint

I picked up a right angle chuck from Bunnings - $13.95 - and it made the job easy. Take it nice and easy with these things - the gears inside are made at the same place they make Toyota diffs. On the second hole I got a bit keen and the drill bit jammed and stripped the gears (I know the sound Drew).

I loosened the top radiator bolts (to give a little more flex) and removed the bottom bolts. I was then able to swing the radiator out of the way - to drill out the holes and to insert the top bolts from the radiator side.

                Driver's side

                Passenger side

                A longer shot

The top bolt on the driver's side has plenty of clearance

But the passenger side is a tighter fit due to the different shape of the radiator at this point. I have installed this one without the washer (for now) as the washer is quite thick and with the washer in place the bolt head touches the radiator. I will be looking at a thinner washer - unless there are any better ideas.

At least now when I get stuck I will have something a bit stronger to snatch from.

Once again - thanks to those you have posted these tips.

                Cheers
                Chippy

i remember reading about this when a few of the others did this a while back...

what's the drill for again? to put in a new hole? or to open up the existing ones a bit more?

I also installed a 5mm rubber packer to stop it from damaging itself in bumps.
That should do it - I'll give it a try this afternoon.

Just to open up the existing hole - nearest the radiator - the outside one is already the right size.

                      Cheers

I'm interested in how this equaliser strap works. Is it just a tree trunk protector attached to each of the recovery points but threaded through the eye of the snatch strap so the snatch strap pulls at the point of the triangle - or is it a special strap with another loop stitched into the mid-point ?

                        Cheers

pretty sure the snatch strap pulls at the point of the triangle... if it was locked at the centre then pulling at anything other than a straight line would defeat the purpose wouldn't it? would put it all one one side.... :?:

Bingo, Chippy! That's what I understand it to be.

Although I hear that ARB are now selling an equalizer strap - unsure of the actual difference, or whether it's just a relabelled tree-trunk protector.

mine looks like just a snatch strap but doesnt have the elasticity.

Which is safer - to thread the tree trunk protector through the loop in the snatch strap - or to attach the snatch strap with another shackle ? I would prefer to not create another potential missile.
