Picked up the Pacies today......gettin' very excited. I got two manifold gaskets as well from the same supplier for $9 so the whole lot cost $379. Not bad considering Toyota wanted $29 per gasket. I will hopefully get time to install them by the weekend. Justo or MrPradoman, would you be able to send me some pics of the transmission dipstick modification please so that I can get some ideas. I have some pics of the Pacies and plan to take a whole lot more of the install process incase anyone is interested. I probably wont post them unless requested to but I will be able to email them to anyone who is interested.

Chesty, if your model is a 2005 onwards you won't have to do the dipstick mod because there is no dipstick.
The 5 speed transmission is a sealed unit.

Well I finally finished the install of the Pacemakers last night. I did it over 3 nights due to family commitments. I guess it probably took around 6-7 hours in total but I messed around a lot making sure that the new flanges mated properly without any stress on the joins. I have lots of photos but they are just raw at the moment with no text added - still, If anyone wants to see them please PM me with your email address and I will send them in 2Mb lots (limit of my email sending). I plan to upload them to my free webspace but that won't be for a couple of days or so when I get some help in doing it.
The install is a pretty straight forward process if you are mechanically inclined but these are the things to consider:
1: Once you have cut your pre-cat from your factory manifold there is no turning back. Do not cut the pre-cat off before you realize that you don't have a welder or you don't know how to weld. You can't drive anywhere with no exhaust manifold.
2: Follow the instructions and bolt everything in place before you tack weld the pre-cats to the flange. If you don't bolt the exhaust up tightly before you tack weld, you run the risk of having a tight fitting or undue stress on the exhaust once the welds are complete.
3: Make sure your tack welds are strong enough. You don't want things moving before you complete the weld.
4: Disconnect the battery or use an anti-zapper before welding. Although only a small risk, it would be bad to spend all that time installing your new headers to find out you blew your ECU.
5: Take your time - there are no points for finishing first. Better to take an extra hour or so than finish the job and have to strip the exhaust down again to fix a leak or re-do a weld.

If anyone has any questions just ask.

Update - photos done 16 pics, 1.30MB in total. I can upload them here if people want but I didn't want to clog the page with photos. If you want them, let me know.

Im cosindering getting some pacemakers and wanted some feed back from people who have purchaced extractors to see if they noticed an excessive mount of heat under the bonnet especially if your on gas.

So do you think paying extra for the ceramic coating to reduce heat is worth it, cause it seems very expensive.Maybe I can try that exhaust wrap or maybe a home made metal heat shield???

I've had mine now for over 18mnths and not noticed any excessive heat from on top of the bonnet or even from the engine itself.
I don't have gas fitted so I can't comment on that issue, but overall I consider it money well spent.

                Guys,
I have had mine on now for about 6 months, (Pacemaker ceramic short version) and have noticed a general improvement in power expecially mid range and slightly better fuel economy.
The main reason I had mine ceramic coated was to reduce excess heat under the bonnet. I have not noticed any extra heat being generated and am more than happy with my purchase.
Price was $1300.00 fitted and in my opinion was well worth the money

                  Hi guys,
Just wanted to thank you all for the previous posts. Has made my decision to get extractors installed very easy. Getting a set of ceramic coated pacemakers installed on Saturday. I just hope they get rid of the tractor noise. Will post the results.

                  • Re: Extractors for 1GR-FE

I've finally finished fitting a set of pacemaker headers. Not one of the nicest jobs to do if you have to work on the ground. In fact if I had to do this all again I would probably just pay some exhaust joint to fit them.

I've noticed a small increase in power but after a close look at all of the joins (checking for leaks) I can still JUST hear that annoying chugging sound (although most of it has disappeared).

When you purchase a pair of pacemakers it come with fitting instuctions (also on the pacemaker web site) which are pretty easy to follow.
I started unpluging and removing the 02 senses then unbolting the old exhaust manifolds from the heads, and unbolting the precats from the main pipes (and removing them from underneath as one assembly).

Then I cut the precats off right on top of the factory welds from the old exhaust manifolds (exactly as per instructions).
It's hard to see in this picture but the cut is done near the head of the verniers

I bolted it all back into place and removed the negitive battery leads then tacked welded the flanges up to the pre cats by removing the rubber covers that clip in between the body and the chassis and reaching behind the front tyres
Then I carefully removed the tacked on pre cats and headers from underneath the car AGAIN.

Finished off welding the new flanges onto the pre cats that are provided with the headers

Then I complete the final fittment of the headers and precats.

I then made a spacer out off S/Steel tube and got a longer bolt and bolted the transmission dip stick tube back on to it's origanal place on the side of the head.

I just had a set of Redback headers (short tube) fitted for $550 at my local muffler joint... I bought the headers on ebay (new) for $350 inc delivery and had them fitted for $200 cash. Noticable increase in power right throught the rev range 8) . I'd estimate a 5% increase in power and torque which is worth while for the coin.

I'll do the rest of the system (inc Y peice) in the next few months.... Apparently you can gain another 10% from a 2 3/4 mandrel bent system (beaudesert exhaust).... Oh and i'll install a uni chip (another 5%) which should give me 20% power and torque all up when I'm done

                        Me too...

I got a set of "Pace Maker" headers/extractors fitted also, but I just wanted to get rid of that annoying "exhaust leak" noise, And it has certainly done that.

It’s so much quieter now. I don’t know about fuel savings or power gains yet (wasn't really the objective) but I'll keep an eye on them too.

I got mine done at "Oak Flats Muffler Men" they were so professional about the entire job.

I would recommend this modification (and muffler shop) to anyone.

 I had a set of pacemakers placed on the vehicle approx 3 weeks ago and the vehicle is using a lot more fuel and seems to pick up slowly on take off. The 02 sensors are all ok had checked by toyota. I had to tighten up the bolts holding the pacies as they wernt that tight. Does anyone know what else could be the problem. Also there were no washers placed on with the nuts, do I need to get some. Now in Adelaide and the jokers who did the job are in cairns, lucky for them I guess. Hard to get good workmanship these days.

                            Hey everyone,

I'm interested in getting extractors, but I'm hesitant to put unequal length extractors (such as the pacemakers) on the 4l V6, as I'm concerned about engine life having unequal exhaust gas temperatures in each tube of the headers.

Has anyone got an opinion about this ? Not a whole lot of discussion about unequal length extractors here.

Does anyone know of any equal length extractors available for the 4l V6 ??

This is only an issue with highly tuned engines (ie: drag racers/circuit cars). The Toyota factory exhaust manifold is of the interference style design so that style of extractor (ie; Pacemaker) will not cause issue.

You can get tuned length exatractors out of the States for the 1GR-FE, however they are unlikely to fit under the bonnet of the 120. Also the tuning length may be an issue as they are for high reving applications.
