    Fuel consumption......

Im in the market for a new 120 prado and i just thought that a fuel consumption thread would help me make up my mind a little easier on which engine / transmission to go for.

So if i can ask anyone who owns a 120 prado to post up there fuel consumption figures , it would be appreciated.....

something along the lines of .......

    ENGINE...........

    TRANSMISSION...............

    TYRE SIZE......................

    ROOF RACKS ETC...........

ANYTHING WHICH MAY AFFECT FUEL FIGURES........

    HIGHWAY FUEL CONSUMPTION................

    CITY FUEL CONSUMPTION.......................

    thankyou....... 8)

    ENGINE: 1KZ-TE

    TRANSMISSION: 5spd Manual

    TYRE SIZE: Stock

Safari Snorkle, ARB Steel Winch bar

    Safari Dtronic

    Highway 11.4-12ish L/100Km

    City 10.4-11.2 L/100Km

My consumption figure range depending on whos driving  But on the whole they are not too bad. I'm suprised the highway figure are more, but i guess that is a consequence of the higher speed.

    Hope it helps

      thanks.....

did you notice any difference in fuel consumption after you fitted the dtronic...?? or was it too minor to tell......

fuel consumption was about the same. ie. sometimes better sometimes worse 8) Doesnt really feel more powerful, just has a more sensitive throttle. Also more black smoke i think, I never had a chance to drive behind my prado before i fitted the dtronic but it does seem to put out a fair amount more smoke than other diesel prados i see around.

If its outputing more smokethat a jackeroo then its likely over fuelling.
Overfuelling is not a good thing - for a whole bunch of reasons other that the environment!

The temptation to give it some boot from time to time does not make any real difference to economy on mine (but then its an ENG-TEK unit).

Hmm, yes i know about overfueling. I think its borderline though. How much does a jackaroo smoke?

too much for a standard engine - particularly since it should have decent boost above 1600rpm.

I'm getting around 1320 km (according to satnav) on approx 169 litres. Thats a mix of highway and city (75%) driving. It does do better on a long highway trip, but haven't got any figures for straight highway use.

The twin hi-clones didn't make any difference to the fuel economy (not like they did on my old Hi-Lux), but they sure make it more drivable.

I am getting around the same as you also Mark, I have pretty much the same fitted with the exception of a toyota bar and coopers ATR tyres.
I agree about the hiclones, I think they might of improved the fuel economy slightly. Have you thought about putting a third hiclone in the top of your snorkel, I have heard about it but not had anyreports of it.

My snorkel has a cyclonic pre-cleaner fitted to it, this tends to get the air swirling around to start with.

how do you mean a pre cleaner, do you mean the same as what is on a troopie which come standard with a snorkel. I have just the normal snorkel head

                        Craig,

I have fitted a Donaldson cyclonic pre-cleaner to the top of my snorkel. I got an exhuast place to modify a small length of stainless pipe to make it fit.

The pre-cleaner swirls the air around as it enters the snorkel. Not only does it seperate the dust (and flying insects) from the air, but also water vapour when its raining.

                            Fuel consumption and performance

I've receintly had a 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust system fitted. On holiday on the Sunshine Coast I loaned my fourby to the factory of Mercury Mufflers in to design the system. WOW what a difference. On the return trip to Sydney I did a test of the fuel consumption. With about 200klms of city driving and the remainder on the highway the main tank switched over after 1000klms. The low fuel light finally came on at 1600klms with about ten litres left. I can now drive from Syd to Brissy and half way back before having to refuel.
Turbo lag is almost non existant and the engine no longer become breathless after reaching 3000RPM. It'll rev eagerly all the way to red line(not that I do that too often). A before and after test on the Dyno gave a gain of approx 5% in power and, most importantly for overtaking, 5% in torque. My prado is the GX manual with safari snorkel and ARB steel bull barand standard everything else. I'm waiting for a finer filter to come in the mail to see if there is any more improvement to be had

got any more info on this on? i.e. if you don't mind telling all, how much did it set you back? and does it make much extra noise?
