    • Steve I've got a nearly identical photo of mine on my old phone of 781km on the first tank.

My best was 10.48L/100 over 275kms, completely stock except bull bar, running 91 octane sitting on 110. Had a rack on for a while and noticed slightly worse fuel economy, just have the three cross bars so I'd expect it to be around 11 now.

      • I think the type of driving is influencing these numbers too much. 10's may be possible if all you do is sit on 100kmph on a flat road but most ppl do city driving and that makes a huge diff. Tyre pressure also can make a 10% diff. Last trip towing a camper, sup on the roof and a pretty full car (2" lift, 200k on the clock, snorkel, alloy bar) did 19l/100k. Around town I normally get 16-17.

        • Thankx for the feedback peeps. He sent me an update today

The vehicle appears to be stock, mums bus, I still have not looked under it. But I will rule out the fuel gauge being out at this stage at least. We already know these vehicles furl gauges are very reliable.

I will be suprised if I find anything aftermarket on ths vehicle, I have asked him to FILL & send me the docket

          • You mentioned your mate got an 05 5 speed earlier. That photo shows a 4 speed. The 5 speed was introduced late in 04. Something doesn't add up.

I used to be able to get 10's when no accessories and standard tyres. Highway only though.
Now I'm lucky to get 15-16.. Highway.
Economy seems to have gone up by 2 litres 100 lately. Not sure why.. But certainly noticeable.

Most I can recall when stock seeing out Of a tank was about 1250. All highway under 100kmhr

He put 160lt in which he says didnt quite fill it, not sure why he didn't fill it..... It was caltex vortex 95.
So far 1590klms & the gauge is just under half on the last tank.

                  So whats he doing right?
Anyone else see economy this good?
I'm about to check if it has bigger tanks? Or a bad fuel gauge & running on fumes?

If that's really possible I will be tempted to cross over to the petrol side for a while.

I'm just catching up on this and my first question (before I call bull****) is to ask for more information.

I filled mine to almost over flowing, a few weeks ago for the first time, so I could start getting an idea of range from full to empty. ($240.00 mid strength BP. The price had dipped below $1.60).

As with the experience of many with the V6, the first tank changed over at about 590kms. By the way the second tank is dropping I reckon it will be a total of about 1000kms to empty. This has all been commuting, in Sydney traffic, fortunately outside of peak hours and driving like petrol is worth more than gold. Vehicle is a 2005 V6 VX auto. ARB bullbar, 2" lift, Bridgestone A/T.

This chap has to be carrying extra fuel or he didn't zero his odometer when he filled up. Or perhaps he has one of those magic energy polariser devices or a Firestone fuel pill?

                  • Thanks for all the posts on petrol consumption on the 120 series.

Just an issue with those strange fuel figures - is it possible one tank is also using up fuel? Hence better mileage is apparent from the instruments? I know with my '1997 Prado - where you switch the tanks manually - if you leave it on one tank, that tank will draw fuel from the other tank ... hence it appears your fuel economy is awesome - until you realise the other tank is also using up fuel! The gauges on the 90 series also seem to operate slowly ... and when you stop the car, the gauges stay set on their last reading. Then when you get going, they often drop a fair bit in their readings ie suddenly more fuel use becomes apparent.

Maybe Toyota did that for a test drive, when you lend the car for half a day!!!

I am looking to replace my 90 series (I bought it new in 1997). I clocked 200k over the extended easter break. I pushed the old girl because the worse its fuel consumption, the better I feel about replacing her.

My wife drives a Lexus RX350, which is not the latest generation (her car is 2009), so I sort of know what to expect with fuel. She gets only 12-13 going into the melbourne CBD from Brighton. In the country, its around 9 litres/100km - using the car's computer. Because the Prado weighs about 25% more than the RX350 and also has a larger motor, I presume that it will use 20% more fuel. So I expect the Prado is likely 14 - 15.5 in traffic to town, and if it was an increase of 20%, then 11 on the highway.

Such figures make me wonder ... my 17 year old auto 2" raised GXL Prado with tow bar and factory alloy bull bar (which is quite a bit lighter than today's Prado's despite having a cast iron engine block) runs at 2,400 RPM at 110 KMH; and the fuel economy for our last trip, which had roof racks, an Oztent on the racks, 40kg of water, packed full of gear, an Autofridge which with contents would weigh 35kg, we did some dirt roads and some real off road too but only for half a day, the total fuel economy according to the odomoter mileage divided by the fuel purchased, was 13.08 litres/100KMH, and that was on the speed limit, full bore up the hills with the gearbox changing down (bad fuel economy is an excuse to buy a new vehicle). Just cruising on the highway at the start of the trip recorded 12.4 litres.

So I guess the old 3400 motor ain't as bad as some say. Still, the starter motor failed last year, so its not been perfect for the last 17 years!

I wonder about Odomotors though ... when my speedo says 114, often the iPhone GPS (Metroworks) says its 110 KMH. So, that error is 3.5%. Hence when I have done 1140 KM on the odometer, its really 1100 KM. So therefore my fuel economy is out by 3.5%, hence 13.08 litres/100 KM is actually 13.5 L/100.

I presume that applies to most of the figures here?

For a new vehicle, the diesel sounds a better option, but I'd like a Prado with the 4.5litre v8 diesel in it.

                    • The odometer is accurate. The speedo is 'adjusted' so that it usually over reads.

                      • My odometer is way out due to running 255/70 tyres.

                          • Can anyone confirm 100% what the dash in that picture is saying means its a 4 speed?

I work on too many different makes & models, can't remember, what I do know is these manufactures do weird things with their D 2431 L.

                            • Confirmed that's a 4 speeder. A 5 speeder has D432L where D and L are in the same column. 432 are in the column to the right.

                                Roger that Andrew,

Well one other thing confirmed, he looked at another 05 today to check what was going on re: 4-5speed & that 05 was the same on the dash. So more than one funny Prado out there. Still waiting to see it in daylight.
