  • On drive down coast from Broome to Kalbarri, I got 520kms out of 180L before it ran dry and had to refuel with jerries. 1000kms ain't bad, I normally get 920

On Petrol - I get 1000klm out of the two 90lt tanks. not sure what that works out to be but I think it is shocking.
On LPG - Loaded with family and camping gear 350klm/68lt tank. Just me 400klm /68lt tank. Both are 90% highway 10% city.

Not sure why so high on Prtrol but all I can say is if there wasn't LPG around I would have to sell it.

    • Hi All, thought id share my fuel economy before asking a few questions.

First have a 2004 GXL 4.0lt and the best economy i have had on the hwy was to Darwin with the wife 3 kids and a boot load and managed 1450km sitting on 110-120kmh which i thought was pretty good, had similar result on the return trip.

Since then i have put a TJM 2"lift, Safari snorkel, still have std AT tyres and am not sure at what point it all went to shit. Last trip to Adelaide resulted it 1000km out of a tank at 110kmh which i got a bit emotional over.

I am looking into getting a scan gauge for my own interest and try to find the cars sweet spot.

My question is regarding the snorkel, assumed it would make it breath a bit better have maybe a bit more power and economy??? but given the sensors on the car if the snorkel is supplying more air does it also compensate for this by adding extra fuel??

the 2" lift i would not think would make that much of a difference unless i went the bigger tyres as the profile of the car is still pretty much the same apart from 50mm more air going under instead of over.

      Cheers.

The lift makes a big difference - 4WD Action did a comparo a while back and it was surprising how much affect it did have.

Your question regarding the snorkel on the V6 - found this LCOOL article awhile ago

          http://www.lcool.org/technical/120_s...rformance.html

          It suggests

" The primary reason one fits a well designed snorkel to their Prado is to ensure safer water crossings and lessen the amount of dust ingested into the air intake and air filter system. Any performance improvement should be seen as a free bonus. Indeed, even if there is a slightly negative affect on engine performance, it is a small price to pay for peace of mind."

Also refer to this maintenance on the air intake pre spinner

          http://www.lcool.org/technical/120_s...e-spinner.html

I know since I've had the 50mm lift done- fuel consumption has headed north - just a fact of modification to our Prado - and have accepted it.....

          Kim

PS - have not installed a snorkel yet - but I would not expect an improvement in fuel economy when I do....

My 150 v6 went up 1.5lt/100 with the lift, 1lt/100 with the bigger tyres, probably 1lt/100 with nthe rack so overall probably 2.5lt/100ks more with the mods, rather the mods than the fuel economy.

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

I would suggest something is dramatically wrong with those figures. When you say you're running big lift, tyres and gear what are we talking here?

                • That 21L per 100 based on say using 160L (approx) so 20 left in the tank. If you have a big lift as you say, running oversized muddies (I presume) loaded up and possible head winds, hills, its a bit more then I would expect without towing. If towing I would say fair enough. I would have thought you to be around the 15's maybe a tad more but certainly not 21....Might need to check a few things.......21 that petrol 100 series cruiser figures.....Cheers Steve

                  • Thanks guys, read through all the forums regarding the snorkel and contemplated an ebay cheapy but went with the safari snorkel.

the missus usually drives it and shes only short and I reakon her sitting a bit higher than the old falcon gives her some domination issues which turn into the right hand peddle bottoming out when the traffic lights go green.

might need to wedge a bit of timber under it to restrict the pedal travel and have a chat with her.

                    thanks again

                    • On a recent trip to Echuca I got around 15.5L/100kms sitting anywhere from 105 - 110kph. I ended up turning off the cruise control as the car wanted to kick back a gear at the slightest incline! With the cruise off I would let her slow down a little up hill rather than have it kick back. I'm also running a 2" lift, 265,70's a rack and numerous other gadgetry. I also have a set of XGT's up front that aren't the most aerodynamic option.

On the way back from Echuca I was towing an offroad cameron camper. The trailer was bare bones with no gear loaded inside but I didn't even bother calculating that mileage. Don't think I was ready to digest the figure. My best guess would be 19 - 21L/100.

                      • Just filled up again for around town driving on the Gold Coast + a trip to Duck Creek Rd last weekend seemed to have averaged around 14lts/100. Happy with that.

                              • Hey Rusty,

don't feel so bad, I'm only running 265/70 kumho muddies on steelies, 2" lift & roofrack, pacemakers and full stainless system, k&n, platinum plugs, safari snorkel.
Just filled up 172 litres from 730kms 23.5l/100.
                                No towing, mostly driving 105km/h.
That's up in the kimberleys, I think heat effects it, 42 degrees seems to be the magic number most days.

                                cheers,
                                Josh
