Hi to those thinking of gas , I have owned 2 prados on gas 2001 90 series on injected gas and 2004 120 series on injected gas, 120 series better system which is a ramano kit, cost of running approx $10/ 100kms travelled, that also includes school run stuff. Downfall only small tanks. Good things, great resale and engine oil stays very clean.

        Hi one and all
now in Perth...have taken everything out and only have an empty roof rack managed to get 320 k's on 64 litres of gas, (20 LITRES PER 100) that's basically City driving, will be some Country driving next week, hopefully it will improve
thinking of getting the injectors cleaned, anyone know a good specialist in Perth?
        cheers Stevo

2004 VX V6 4.0 - Average over the last 2 tanks works out to 13.6L/100. However I need to add that this is NOT what the onboard computer is reflecting.
Onboard computer (Toyota stock) states that the average is 12.4L/100, however doing the math of litres vs km travelled, it works out at 13.6.
Stats from a iPhone app called Road Trip, fantastic app and worth the couple bucks for it.

Just did another fill up in my 03 GLX 4L auto. 1st tank I wasn't 100% sure of distance or if it was totally full, because the dealer filled it up prior to purchase. Assuming the dealer did fill it properly it got 17.8L/100km (about 50/50 hwy/city). This second tank I'm more sure of, and this time it's hit 18.5L/100km (mostly city).

Tyres are at 35psi, no roof-rack, and other than a sovereign bar no other mods (like winch etc) that would add weight. And the problem isn't my right foot - I tend to drive fairly sedately, taking off gently etc. I'm at a bit of a loss how to improve it. I knew they were thirsty, but I expected it would be a bit better than this, and based on the other figures in this thread it looks like I'm using about 3L/100 more than I should be.

Are these values based on the onboard computer, or litres vs km driven?
18.5 does seem like you have a thirsty one, however in fairness I do around 150 - 200km a day to work and back and it's 80% freeway (120km zones) and "side" roads with 80 - 100km and VERY few stop and starts, so that could be why I'm getting 13.6. Sitting in traffic might see that climbing closer to the stats you are getting.

You won't believe the difference in driving conditions between Sydney and Johannesburg. Don't tell me that 120km/h is on the Ben Schoeman!

Calculated from Litres required for a complete fill vs km driven. My work route involves a stop-off to drop junior prado lover off at school, then a fairly clear run the rest of the way (about 10km). The run home is almost always plain sailing. One morning a week I will get tangled up in a traffic jam as the pensioners try to get into Aldi, but otherwise it's normally a continuous run at about 70 *cough* 60 if there's any police types reading.

                    Hi Piet,
With all the road works and lane upgrades on the Ben Schoeman at the moment, I think during peak traffic you would be lucky to do 20km/h, nevermind the 120km/h

The 120km/h section I'm doing is on the R28/N14. I'm pretty lucky with my traffic and manage to maintain a total trip average from home to the office of 68km/h. 84km one way - so it's long distance, but very little traffic and very little stop and starts.

Two days a week I work in Midrand, which is only 26km one way, traffic is worse but only about 4 stops for the whole trip.

Then on weekends my foot is heavier and lots of small short trips with a lot of stops and starts.

Average consuption over the last 2500km +- is 13.6l/100

I'm not sure how much of an influence altitude would have on the consuption? JHB ranges between 4500 - 6000 feet above sea level

Another fill-up - this time with about 50/50 highway/city, and it got 16.1L/100km. Better than the 18 I had from last tank (mostly city), and better than the first tank which was also 50/50 highway/city but still far worse than I expected
I've cleaned the air sensor and the air filter. At the moment I'm wondering if it might be worthwhile changing sparkplugs and air filter. Being 2nd hand I can't be 100% sure of what level of servicing it has had.

cleaned the MAF and with no change in economy thought i would change air filter. Now its higher than it was before i changed the A/F. Maybe time to add some dust to the A/F going by whats happenning - now i am confused! :? I am not sure how much you can trust the onboard fuel economy guage. How does it work? Is it taking an average of the figures it downloads, or what does it do? I notice as soon as i pull up at lights and sit still it says 99.9L/100km, so thats scary if it averages the figures from sitting still into the final figure :?: I think its time to stop looking at fuel consumption and spend more time destressing over it and enjoying the ride

hi guys, i'm new here, but a long time 4wder.

my 2004 v6 auto has a 2" lift, 275 cooper st, arb bar and hid spots. after reading this thread and seeing those figures of 12-13 / 100, i thought to myself "holly crap, that'd be nice". i'm currently battling to get 950km from both tanks!!!!!!!

after reading about maf sensors and the like, i thought what the harm is it in trying.

well........i have currently done 1/2 a tank in the main and have travelled just over 400km's (not kidding, yes the tyres will have thrown out the speedo).

i'm glad i cleaned the maf and wish that i had of read this post a year ago

                          thanks prado point

99.9 is probably the highest it reads. It says that because you're using fuel but going nowhere, which it probably a lot worse than 99.9 (you could use several tanks and go nowhere if you really wanted to). The Scangauge has a LPH gauge which hovers between about 1.5 to 2 LPH for my 4.0 V6 (you could idle it for over 90hrs on a tank!)

I think its time to stop looking at fuel consumption and spend more time destressing over it and enjoying the ride

                              Hallelujah..........
am I excited..had a expert (20 years experience) mobile injector/mechanic look at my car whilst in Perth, asked me so many questions, did a visual check of maf, air filters, spark plugs etc. and then took the Prado for a drive and said " this vehicle feels heavy, it wallows on corners and feels nothing like any other Prado I have ever driven" and then asked what tyre pressures are you running on your BFG all terrains? answered with 36/38psi and said why? so I said "that's what most Prado drivers are running" well did we have a very long chat on tyre pressures, towing, looking at Max pressures allowed from the tyre manufactures ( on the side of all tyres) and why tyres wear out etc. etc. and $120.00 later (2 hours on site) I have now increased the pressure to 46psi all round and boy is my vehicle a different car to drive in all aspects, but most of all I am now experiencing genuine fuel consumption usage of 14.9 to 16.6 and that's on LPG around the suburbs and a trip to Busselton travelling at speed-limits up to 110kph and just sneaking slightly over that....never before have I seen anywhere near those figures as my previous posts have shown, the next test? towing the van to Melbourne.
And the advice with towing that I received? run the Prado with 55 psi in the back, 46 in the front and the 8ply dual axle tyres on the van at 60psi! (Previously 35)
Now I am sure that there will be people out there saying I'm nuts but so far very happy, can't wait to see what it does on Petrol..
All for now from Sunny Perth
