  • Well I have had bad fuel consumption for past 4 years, took the car to a friend checked the fuel pressure regulator and guess what it is seized, am also replacing injectors, see what happens now.

    • A big advantage of the 180 l tanks is that you can wait until the petrol prices are at the bottom of the cycle and save 15 c/l !My 06VX V6 gets 15s+ around town on short trips but I have seen [once] below 12s on a trip. Fully loaded with a roof basket on top with a second spare on it, it gets 15-16 l/100km at 100-110 kph. 6 years on and 65000km since I bought I still reckon I am in front of the D4d I was thinking about and which was $5000+ dearer. It may be a different story if I was doing 20000 pa or a lot of heavy towing. Petrol is a steady 10% cheaper than diesel and this negates a lot of the economy advantage and the injectors don't cost $2500 at around the 100000 km mark. Neil

      • I just got back from the border track. Filled up in Ouyen. A full day doing the track and playing on the dunes and driving home I averaged 14.1 lt per 100km (as per scanguage). The trip home I got down to 11.4 lt per 100km. Very happy with the petrol and using less than my CRD Patrol I did have.
Still on grandtreks but bilstein/king lift, ARB bash plates, awning and roof racks, dual batteries and the usual camping gear.
I also agree with 404pug I'm in front buy buying a petrol.

A bit off topic, but I sold my CRD patrol 2 days ago for a petrol 120. Was curious behind your reasons for the change? I changed for a few reasons, wasn't happy with towing performance, not happy with drive ability round town, build quality was crap, drank as much as a petrol, finally, for financial reasons as it was a lease car.

          • Had it for 3 years (longest car I've owned). Main reason for sale was to sell it while under warranty and still worth ok money. But yes go to the high country 2-3 times a year and towing performance was ordinary compared to the Prado. Last trip in the Patrol towing, had a horrendous head wind and couldn't maintain 100kmh and it was either mod it for more power (warranty would then be useless) or sell it and buy something with more power. Had my mind open about fuel use prior to the purchase of the Prado, but didn't have to worry as it uses less fuel and is cheaper to maintain.

Patrols are a great rig but once your towing they are a bit underpowered. But wouldn't go back unless it had a ls1 in it.....

            • I just got back from the extended break (Easter into Anzac day) and a short trip with the family to the west coast of SA. Towing an offroad (Heavy Duty) Cameron Camper I averaged 20L/100kms on the knocker. The car would have weighed in heavy as it was loaded for 8 days camping and sports most of the extras the wife doesn't understand are necessary for safe off-roading. Though my mate never showed it I'm sure trying to sit behind me would have been a nightmare as I drove for economy so floated between 90 and 110kmph (depending on whether I was going up or down a hill or with a head or tail wind).
On a recent trip minus the camper I got 15L/100kms which I am happy with considering the mods I have done to the vehicle.

              • A mate recently picked up an 05 5 speed auto v6. It's stock as a rock.
He put 160lt in which he says didnt quite fill it, not sure why he didn't fill it..... It was caltex vortex 95.
So far 1590klms & the gauge is just under half on the last tank.

                So whats he doing right?
Anyone else see economy this good?
I'm about to check if it has bigger tanks? Or a bad fuel gauge & running on fumes?

If that's really possible I will be tempted to cross over to the petrol side for a while.

                • Probably has a long range tank or the fuel gauge is wrong/faulty.

                  • I have not looked yet, but is there a genuine option for bigger tanks? Or only the aftermarket ones we know about?

                      • Goulburn to Melbourne with 1 tonne+ camper on the back, sitting on 106 then home taxi service till reached 880km.
16lt/100km not too upset with that. 120 petrol auto 5speed with 4 in the car and some gear.
Definitely noticed the new camper on the back, thank goodness for electric brakes.

16 towing a tonne is pretty ok I think.

                              • #### you can push 1500 out of the V6 but this is definitely not towing and mainly just cruising and vey little city driving. I got this out of the first tank before it flicked over o the second one [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] My guess is he has a long range tank or some thing is not right or he has a good imagination or he's going to ring you soon for a tow cause he just sucked two tanks dry lol. Those figures he's telling you are 120/150 diesel figures. Never ever heard of anyone doing 10's in a V6 petrol. Maybe if you drove it non stop freeway driving at 80k but I would even doubt that. I use to get 11.2 best out of my V6 freeway driving with absolutely no mods and standard tyres at 42psi. Now with a lift, different tyres etc its around 11.6L per 100......Cheers Steve
