  • Rear Bars??

    Hi All,

Hopefully picking up my new 150 series GXL on Friday and driving it straight down to Opposite Lock for a full treatment. Am having some issues deciding on a rear bar though.

    What are others running?
I really like the look of the Kaymar Bar but am told they're not as strong as they used to be and my OL dealer tells me they're are expensive (however, he still hasn't got me a price).
The Opposite Lock Bar I find to be UGLY and doesn't really offer any rear protection but more just acts as a dual wheel carrier.
I haven't seen one but am told the ARB one is very boxy and also not real strong.

    What can people tell me?
Photos and experiences would be appreciated.

    Cheers
    Brad

    Re: Rear Bars??

    Hi Brad

I looked at a Kaymar and on reading the warranty passed it up as it required a Kaymar towhitch to be used. Refer link below.

My need may be different to yours as I tow a 2t Caravan

      Re: Rear Bars??

I have put a Kaymar bar on ours fitted with a single wheel carrier and dual jerry can holder. Given that I wore the 120 door hinges out from carrying heavier wheels and tyres and the door ended up springing open at a rather interesting off-road moment, a very expensive fix, I decided that this time round I would invest the money in the right place

Don't care about Kaymar warranty and we tow and Ultimate so I have no problem either way

      Regards

So is it possible to run a genuine towbar and a Kaymar rear bar at the same time.

Not sure if ARB even make one, when I asked the sold me a Kaymar. It's yet to show up and I can confirm are extremely expensive. $4300! But it's the only one I've seen that has any real rear protection. Not 100% about fitting genuine and Kaymar together, however I highly doubt it. As Rob said, the reasons for the expense are two fold, get the weight off the rear door and provide some protection for the acre of plastic wrapped around the Prado's ass!
          Cheers,
          Dusty

Holy $hit that's exspensive! The opposite lock one is looking better each day. I hope i can retain the factory towbar with theirs.

Why would you wish to retain the factory tow bar with the kaymar bar which has an incorporated towbar?

The kaymar warranty is no different to the Toyota towbar warranty, in that for it to be warrantied you must use their tow hitch.

Having spoken with kaymar and toyota, the reason is that it is the only one they have tested it with.

I think you'd have to have done something seriously wrong for them to deny a warranty claim because you used a different tow hitch which was of standard.

Barry, again could be wrong but from memory you can/ do need a tow bar to go with the OL rear bar.

It's a shame that the grand I spent on a towbar could have went towards a kaymar. Oh well hind sight is a bitch.

Was it fitted by Kaymar or a local shop?

Obviously not kaymar if poor fit.

Kaymar themselves do an exceptional job.

That's really disappointing though, make a bit of a fuss over it, you shouldn't have to expect or accept a poor finish on a $70,000 vehicle and $4000 accessory.

The bar was fitted by local shop.
May be because it is the first 150 bar they have done???
Still working with "local shop" to complete the install to satisfactory standard
