  • Which Springs?

    Hi all, looking for some input into suspension for my 2012 GX, specifically spring rates.

    I'm looking at getting a Bilstein 40mm lift kit with either medium or heavy duty kings springs just trying to decide which way to go.

    Normal every day loaded extra's include:

    - Dual battery up front
    - ECB Big Tube Alloy bar
    - Pioneer Rack
    - 30SecondAwning
    - 4mm Underbody Protection
    - Rear draws (approx. 70-80kg I reckon)

    Generally we'd go away with just a loaded car but July we'll be heading north with the old mans camper trailer which is approx. 1t loaded

    I'm looking for more comfort if possible and thinking medium duty is probably the way to go but interested to see what other people think?

    This is the kit I'm looking at:

    The A712 isn't correct for a 150. 24-173032-1 would be better.

      Ok so I need to sort that out, but what about the springs? Any thoughts?

      Any are you sure, a fair few kits seem to include that set

        Yes I'm sure. Whitey will confirm.

          Ok I'll have to look into it, same struts listed in this kit

            That's an old listing.

            Basically, the A712/A713 aren't suitable for a 50mm lift as they are not long enough. Also the valving rates aren't ideal. Whitey has done the hard yards. Have a look at his numerous threads found listed in the Suspension Database thread.

              Yer going through his threads now, the kits only lists them at 40mm lifts though which might explain the different shocks

                Hey Craggles,

                A good database for all the types of Bilsteins for Prados can be found here;

                http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...hs-and-Valving

                The reason that a 712 is no good in a 150 can be found here;

                http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-150-Prado-IFS

                Unfortunately Quadrant no longer exists since Jim retired, and the brilliant 24-173032-1 150 strut he designed is no longer available.

                The closest Bilstein strut to the 24-173032-1 is the BE5-D563-M2, which runs a bit more rebound, and has slightly less critical damping rate at low velocity. The only hassle is it comes standard 575mm open length, and the OEM upper arm ball joint binds exactly at 575mm, meaning you'll need a strut shorter than 575mm so you don't go and hang 120kg worth of unsprung mass on the upper ball joint. You will need to shorten the D563 back to 570mm if you plan on keeping your OEM upper arms.

                The higher rebound on the front can feel stiffish on-road, but off-road it will be awesome.

                The rear 24-238830 shock is a short open length of 587mm with poor rebound valving, and it will be unsuitable in the rear of a lifted Prado, particularly if you pack it up or have heavy ball weight on while towing.

                A better shock with more travel and much better valving is the B46-1478LT.

                Regarding coil selection;

                http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...il-free-length

                I'd advise keeping the front end around 790-800mm, any higher and you'll lose droop in a 1:1 ratio. I'd also suggest limiting your spring rate on the IFS to lower than 700lb/in, 660lb/in Kings will work well with the D563 strut, meaning don't use anything more than a KTFR-101H.

                In the rear it's good to keep around 830mm, but then you'll need that long open length 1478LT shock to keep some decent droop, and to get that height you'll want at least a KTRR-102, though it is on the short free height side, and many will instead use a Dobinsons 327 coil.

                Hope this helps you out!
