  • How does the car behave with regards to the proximity keys

    Hey everyone,
I purchased a 2012 GXL 150 on tuesday. I'm just wondering if anyone can explain the sort of behaviour the car has with the key around. Any annoying idiosyncrasies i should look out for? I will be doing a lot of camping - should i be putting the key on the other side of camp away from the car? I know in a lot of earlier proximity systems on other cars, the key would frequently trigger the fuel pump to prime and the lights to keep turning on in anticipation etc. Any advice or wisdom would be much appreciated, i don't want to learn anything the hard way out bush with a flat battery!

no mate I normally leave my key on top of my back passenger side tyre and everyone in my camp knows where it is and it will not activate the unlock system until you grab it and push the button or go near the door and touch the handle. Cheers

I read the user manual and now i can answer my own question!
The manual says the key turns off if it is left within 2 meters of the car for more than 10 minutes. In some cases it may require the use of the key's buttons to unlock or lock the car next go (because the key wont turn back on until a button is pushed.)

Related to this, how can one leave a spare key/transponder in the car or when off surfing etc.? I recall that this has been dealt with but I can't find it. can anyone direct me to the link please?

          Remove key from fob.
          Place fob in car.
          Lock car with key.
          Go surfing.

You can get Toyota to change the settings so the transponder only starts the car if it's in the front. So you can hide it in the back and the car won't start (making it a bit safer).

You can also wrap it in alfoil or put it in a metal tin and you can hide almost anywhere

Another one i found while camping recently.
you can lock the spare key in the car if you use button on the other key to lock it.
Doing this disables the proximity and you need to press the unlock button to open it.
