Unfortunately I have to report to fellow PP's that my beloved 150 series Prado and caravan was written off in a major accident last Tuesday after being hit by a woman who fell asleep. We had been returning from the Gold Coast along the Pacific Highway near Brunswick Heads when a mature aged P plater left the roadway as the driver had fallen asleep at 10am. Upon waking she has swerved back onto the highway at 90kph and lost control slamming into the rear of the Prado and the front of our almost 2.5T caravan I had been towing. This then caused us to jacknife at 100kph and sent us into a 180deg spin whereby the van left the road and flipped before slamming into a tree. Luck was very much on our side as when the van flipped this detached the hitch from the tow ball and prevented us from flipping too. The safety chains kept us attached, but the van took the majority of the impact and the hitch attempted to punch through the rear door where my middle daughter was sitting. Side curtain airbags on the drivers side deployed but otherwise we were all uninjured and walked away. The other driver had a minor laceration to her head and was suffering concussion. My wife and I are so grateful that the Prado stayed upright and saved our three kids and ourselves from harm.
The offending driver had fallen asleep as she had been gambling all night at Jupitors Casino and was returning home to Ballina about 1.5hrs away. She was completely uninsured (probably because she'd gambled all the money away). My Prado and caravan were fully insured with NRMA and they have been great as both are write-offs.
I captured the entire incident on my dash cam and the footage is pretty amazing. I managed to remove some bolt on mods before it went to the assessors so have listed my Steinbauer chip, Pedalbox throttle booster, K&N Filter and secondary fuel filter for sale in the classified sections. I lost 140lts of fuel as I had just filled up prior to the accident, my recently fitted OME 2 inch lift and Taipan 3 inch exhaust.
Not happy, even sadder now I have just bought a Ford Everest as I needed the upgraded towing capacity.
