  • 1 KD- FTV - very long start

    Hi All,

New to the forum and based in Kenya, and trying to solve my prado problem out! Anyway it looks like this is the forum for that!

I have a 2002 prado, with a 1KD-FTV engine. in the last two days of use, it has gone from starting first kick on the ignition key to very long cranking with an eventual start. once running performance seems normal. I have searched on a number of threads but not finding the solution just yet.....I have checked the following:

    Fuel filter is well seated
    glow plugs are working
    no vacuum in tank
changed fuel filter and tried a new one- no dirt in old filter and replacement has made no difference.
checked fuel lines to see they are all properly seated
battery voltages on both are fine, and cranking sounds normal speed.
Plugged it into a diagnostics machine and no error codes.

i do know the injectors are worn and need replacing. However I cant imagine this would make such a difference in two days time?

I would be very greatful for any suggestions anyone might have! Many thanks!

Have you tried priming the fuel filter?
Does your Prado come with an engine immobiliser? If so, have you changed keys recently?
Have you checked battery / alternator voltages?

      Thanks for the reply.

The voltages on the alternator and battery are fine. The vehicle doesnt have an immobiliser. One thing I have noticed, when you prime the fuel filter it goes hard after a couple of pumps. If I leave the vehicle standing without starting for a few minutes its as if the line looses pressure because you need to pump it again. Am I correct in thinking that the pump should stay firm until the engine turns over???

It seems to help a little when I prime the filter but still not starting as it should.....

If the system is functioning correctly, it should stay hard, like after priming. Perhaps there is an air leak in the fuel lines.

Well think finally solved, and stupidly it comes back to a power issue. Despite measuring both batteries, I didnt measure them under cranking. So it seems I had a bad earth cable and on cranking the voltage went too low for the injectors to be powered (below 10 volts). After about 15 cranks power comes back and the injectors function again. Anyway all earths cleaned, and seems back to normal for now. Hope that was it.....Thanks for the advice, much appreciated

Still not entirely sure why the primer doesnt seem to stay firm...cant find any leaks in pipes but will see..

i had the same issue with starting and with the primer not staying firm, when i manually primed the fuel filter the starting was ok. i eventually found that there was mixing of diesel into the engine oil which was due to leaky metallic gaskets on the return manifold of the diesel injectors. replaced the gaskets and the starting problem was gone and the primer also remained pressurized / firm. My recommendation is to check engine oil level to rule out any diesel + engine oil mixing. Other than that perhaps the primer on the fuel filter may have a faulty non return valve - solution is to replace the primer which is not an expensive item.
