  • solar question

I have just got a 4wd supercentre 160 w solar set up. In today's heat it was reading about 18 v at the end of the lead. Is this too much for the battery? Isn't the solar controller supposed to reduce this? It came with alligator clamps for the battery with an anderson plug on the end to plug the lead from the solar into. If I take a reading here on the clamps it is back to 13.4-13.5 v. Is this correct? Can I just plug the solar panel lead into the anderson plug which goes to the camper battery [via circuit breaker] and do away with the clamps? Ditto the anderson plug at the back of the car to charge the second battery in the Prado?
The vague instructions say there should be a light to show the system is working. I can't see it but the system certainly gave the AGM battery in the camper a charge.

18v sounds like the unregulated direct panel voltage. If it's coming from the regulator, it's not working too well. Batteries are usually boost/bulk charged at around 14.5-14.8v. Any more than that and you run the risk of coooking the battery.

Did you have the solar panel connected to the battery when you measured the voltage?
Most regulators need a battery connected to them to hold to hold the voltage down.
Cheap regulators simply turn on and off so you can get large voltage swings.

If the panel only has a cheap regulator I would swap it out with a good quality PWM of MPPT
      regulator.

Thanks Leigh. Makes sense. What about plugging the panel's lead straight into the Anderson plug that goes to the battery in the camper [or car for 2nd battery there]? That ok?

As long as the panel has a controller should not be an issue, it would be better from an efficiency point of view if the charger is as close as possible to the battery. In my setup I have a controller mounted in the car and one in the van near the batteries. I have Anderson plugs on the car and van that go to the input side of the regulators, I plug the unregulated panels into these.

Always best if possible to have as short as cable as possible between the regulator and the battery to reduce voltage drop. Voltage drop on the input side is not as much of a problem.

What you propose will work ok.

              solar question

Like most setups out of the box, I have my mppt fixed to the back of my solar panel but have replaced the supplied small core cable from mppt to battery with a heavier duty 4mm twin to avoid any voltage drop and extended it to approx 8m allowing me to move it when required to keep out of shade. I also replaced the "very" entry level mppt unit with a slightly better unit off eBay. At least the replacement unit offers a little more info on an LCD display compared to a row of leds.
