  • Towing pop-top van litres per 100 klm. petrol

    Hi all,

Was looking for litre per 100 klm while towing. Have a one previous owner 2000 mod 3.4 ltr petrol auto for past six months.( 210,000 klm now on clock ) My question: Does 22.60 ltrs per 100 klm towing a pop-top van (1.35 t ) sound reasonable. Approx 50% was slight hills. Cost to travel 162 klm was $46. ( av. $1.24 ltr ) 36.6 ltr used. Equates to around 11 miles to gallon ( Im an old bastard ).

P.S copied & pasted this of another thread i was reading back 11/16

    Regards all.

    Sounds about right to me.
Nothing unexpected by the looks of what you posted.

I used to Tow a Jayco expanda 16.49-3 ATM of 1902kg and would use anywhere between 19 and 23l/100km. This was a 4l V6 with a steel bar, 2 inch lift and snorkel.
2018 150 Series Crystal Pearl Prado VX 2.8l. 2 inch King springs and Bilstein shocks, Airtek TJM snorkel.

Personally I think it is high, but depends on what speed you were doing.

I tow an almost 2 tonne boat. Around town it is about 17 l/100 km. On trips to the South Coast, it has always been 17 to 18 l/100 km. There are some very big hills on the way back (Mt Ousley primarily). I sit on a max of 80 km/h, any faster I feel is unsafe with such a large and heavy boat.

            Thanks,

Was averaging around 95-100 kl phr. Will try sitting around 85-95 next time. Was using Overdrive on flats and down hill, drops revs back to appx 2500. Otherwise sit around 3k.

            regards.

TBH, there is no advantage, when towing a van or large boat in doing anything above 90km/h. The only thing you will get is an earlier arrival, hefty fuel bill and stressed car. Sweet spot will be anywhere between 90 and 95 km/h.

                  Update RE- Towing

                  Updated

                  Hi,
If anyone reads this, i have managed to get a lot better klm per litre than previous times.
New all terrain tyres. Pumped front tyres to 38 psi. Rear tyres to 40 psi. ( previous 30- 32 psi -my stupid fault ) Van is same 42 psi. Full service, incl new air filter, plugs, oil.
                  Murchison ( vic ) to Gundagai ( nsw ) reasonably flat to undulation. - 377 klm @ 62.45 ltr = 16.60 ltr per 100 klm.
Gundagai to Dalmeny ( sth nsw coast ) Steep/ undulating to hilly. - 381 klm @ 79.00 ltr = 18.40 ltr per 100 klm. Kept to around 90 klm per hour towing.
Non towing average- 13 ltr per 100 klm. Sth coast steep / undulating.
Also air cond on 90% of time all the way.( towing + not )

                  Cheers.

That is about what I would expect you to get. Glad it has improved.

Good idea with the tyre pressures. I ran 38-40 for years and as of about 6 months ago have kept mine at 50 psi. Even better economy again. My tyres can handle 80 psi max so no biggy.

How is the ride at that pressure? I run mine at 40 but was considering going higher.

                        Thanks

How is the wear pattern at those higher pressures? Ran mine on the 90 series at 40 a few years ago and got excessive central wear so have dropped back to about 36 now and all good. Average about 13.4l/100 doing mainly highway.

I run 38psi in every car i have ever owned, and have yet to see any central wear pattern on any tyres.
Rule of thumb what a tyre shop told me, is max inflation pressure of the tyre minus 10%, and you cant go wrong.

                              Tyre pressure / towing

I will only run 40ish while towing van & stuff in back of prado. Think i will go back to 35 when home and van off. Will try 45 psi on way back later week. Haven't noticed rough ride towing or not.
